Wanida
Tantiwittayapitak
7 November 1955 - 6 December 2007

Wanida's nickname is "Mod."
She was born into a middle class Chinese family that is relatively well
to do. All her siblings received good education, and almost all of them
have devoted their lives to social causes. Even in this familial context,
Mod was something different. She was an activist struggling alongside
manual laborers ever since her student days. When she completed her education,
she went to work with the poor in the rural areas, earning the love and
respect of the grassroots and the marginalized. Thus when the Assembly
of the Poor (AOP) was established, she became
one of its chief advisors. She had served the AOP very well, to say the
least.
Mod humbly served the underprivileged. She led a simple life. She was
willing to learn from the poor and was an astute student of local cultures.
Although she could not speak the Lao language used in the E-san provinces,
she well understood and appreciated the villagers'wisdom. She used her
university education as well as her network with friends in Bangkok, especially
the ones in the NGO sector, to enable the villagers to have access to
the ears and eyes of those in power in various governments. This was a
courageous act. And on numerous occasions, she confronted and challenged
various forms of injustice, nonviolently. These acts rarely ended in the
victory of the villagers. But Mod and the villagers showed great forbearance
and solidarity, and for this they deserved our full respect.
Each struggle put Mod and other AOP leaders under great stress. Through
rumors and various media outlets, their reputations were smeared. Each
struggle slowly impaired their physical health. The "settlements"
they constructed in front of the government house as a sign of nonviolent
protest were forcefully removed by the powers-that-be. But eventually
Mod and her virtuous companions relied on mental training to cultivate
inner peace, the sublime states of mind.
In the last two years of Mod's life her mind was cool and calm, but she
was ultimately diagnosed with cancer. Doctors - both traditional and modern
- could not contain its malignancy. She peacefully passed away at Ramathibodi
Hospital. She had the opportunity to meditate among the friends and relatives
who loved her till her last breath.
In her life Mod had performed a lot of good actions. Although the poor
have yet to emerge victorious, Good will triumph over Evil eventually.
