We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate with a proven background of research in urban topics, to work on the City Health and Wellbeing Initiative and other urban initiatives at SEI Asia.

Job description

SEI Asia is seeking a Research Associate with a proven background in policy-relevant urban research to join a growing urban research program. SEI Asia is currently implementing the City Health and Wellbeing initiative in collaboration with SEI York and SEI Africa, alongside research on urban climate resilience, urban waste management and disaster risk reduction in Asian cities. Through its research, SEI seeks to share knowledge, promote debate and contribute to evidence-based policy making for more sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities. Research activities are carried out in a collaborative manner, building and strengthening engagement with varied stakeholders ranging from local and national governments, multi-lateral agencies, NGOs and local community organisations.

The Research Associate will report directly to the assigned Line Manager (Urban Research Fellow) and respective project leaders/managers that he/she will work with, and under overall supervision of the Centre Director.

Main responsibilities:

  • Working with the Urban Research Fellow, to carry out research activities for ongoing projects and participate in developing new research projects.
  • Participate in research analyses and writing peer-reviewed research publications and other project outputs such as policy briefings, blogs and conference presentations.
  • Develop and disseminate communications products in conjunction with the Communications team.
  • Identify new opportunities and support fundraising activities and potential future areas of work.
  • Represent SEI at external events and participate in networking with relevant institutions and organisations.
  • Gradually take on increasing responsibilities, including leading sub-projects, and managing interns or assistants.
  • Take on administrative and reporting tasks related to projects, as well as own personal administrative tasks such as time reporting and expenses claims.

The research associate will be expected to work with colleagues from other teams in SEI Asia including water resources, gender, climate change and DRR, in developing cross-cutting programs of work. The role will also require collaboration with SEI York and SEI Africa on the City Health and Wellbeing initiative, and more broadly with other SEI colleagues internationally. The research associate will also contribute to other SEI-wide activities and reports as appropriate.

Skills and qualifications required

We are looking for a person with a strong interest and proven track record in designing and executing research projects, with excellent writing skills and able to communicate and collaborate with a variety of actors.

  • Masters’ degree in a relevant subject such as urban planning, geography or other related humanities, social science or environmental science
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience of working in the urban sector as a researcher and/or practitioner, in topics such as urban sustainable development, urban planning, urban mobility or urban resilience, with demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders on the ground
  • A publication record in academic and/or practitioner literature
  • Ability to communicate to a diverse audience through written outputs and other media
  • Ability to work in a diverse, international team
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a high-pressure environment and to prioritize and effectively manage assignments in a timely manner.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as projects require
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

Desirable qualifications:

  • Fluency in an Asian language is desirable
  • Experience working in Asia countries is desirable
  • Proven capacity to use GIS software is an advantage
