Pattani, Thailand

 

 

  1. About ACTED

ACTED is a non-governmental organisation with headquarters in Paris, founded in 1993. Independent, private and not-for-profit, ACTED respects a strict political and religious impartiality and operates according to principles of non-discrimination and transparency.

ACTED’s vocation is to support vulnerable populations affected by wars, natural disasters and/or economic and social crises, and to accompany them in building a better future. The programs implemented by ACTED are in 35 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean seek to cover the multiple aspects of humanitarian and development crises through a multidisciplinary approach which is both global and local, and adapted to each context.

  1. Project Background

 

The project aims to promote inter-communal collaboration, mutual understanding and positive engagement between Pattani-Malay and Central-Thai communities, while concurrently improving economic opportunities for vulnerable youth groups within Pattani Province, Thailand.

These aims will be achieved by addressing key conflict drivers, such as the lack of trust in Government institutions; particularly the education system and the lack of economic opportunities for youth. These initiatives will in turn positively affect the ongoing legacy of prejudice between Pattani-Malay and Thai Buddhist communities.

Specifically, the project will coalesce Pattani-Malay and Central-Thai youth, to participate in culturally sensitive and collaborative vocational and small enterprise development training, which will be developed collaboratively with local stakeholders, such as CSOs, Government educational authorities (OVEC), local businesses and vocational training colleges.

Social cohesion between mixed youth groups and potential employers, will be enhanced through the implementation of a cross cultural internship scheme (i.e. Pattani-Malay youth interning at Central-Thai business, and vice versa). This will improve cultural and social awareness and ultimately the employability of VT graduates, who are then better able to secure sustainable livelihood opportunities within a multi-cultural environment and are therefore less inclined to support or participate in disruptive, divisive and violent activities.

  1. Assignment and main responsibilities of CSO Trainer

 

Each vocational training (VT) course to be offered throughout this project will be co-taught by pairs of trainers – one from the local partner VT College and one from a local CSO.  Through this framework, ACTED will seek to ensure that all courses are more responsive to the needs of local youth and are facilitated bi-lingually and by trainer pairs that reflect the ethnic and religious diversity of the participating students.  Each CSO trainer will be responsible for the co-delivery of one of five VT courses to be offered throughout the program over a series of four batches, each course consisting of 150 hours spread over a period of three months. The VT courses will be composed of technical modules in addition to life skills modules; the latter being the main responsibility of the CSO trainer.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Participate fully and regularly in TOT activities to ensure the technical capacities of participating VT College and CSO Trainers in their respective vocational field, Peer to Peer (P2P) and Collaborative Learning Methodologies and general pedagogy;
  • Ensure safe learning environments for youth of conflicting backgrounds where they can (constructively) air grievances and work together on common projects related to their respective field of vocational training;
  • Regularly monitor and report student participation and attendance;
  • Deliver and assess pre-, midterm and post-course examinations for participating students;
  • Organize and participate in graduation ceremonies;
  • Work with ACTED Project staff to facilitate regular monitoring of VT activities, including the organization of student/graduate focus group discussions, dissemination of written feedback forms, etc.;
  • Coordinate with ACTED and SC staff where needed to ensure the continued effectiveness of VT courses, contributing to periodic trainer feedback discussions.

 

 

  1. Required Qualification and Skills
  • Practical experience of working within local CSOs;
  • Experience of instruction, teaching or group leadership;
  • Experience in teaching vocational training skills is desirable but candidates with general instruction, teaching or group leadership skills are encouraged to apply;
  • Experience working with vulnerable youth in Deep South;
  • Fluent in Thai and Patani-Malay, English language capacity desirable;
  • Availability and willingness to participate in the initiative over the course of a 3 months period.

 

  1. Activity schedule
  • TOT should take place in Pattani for a 3 weeks period in October 2019, to be confirmed.
  • Four batches of VT courses, each course consisting of 150 hours spread over a period of three months, will be provided starting in November 2019 until June 2021. The VT courses should take place in Pattani. Dates and location to be confirmed.

 

 

  1. Application Procedure

  • If selected they will be expected to sign an agreement which confirms their commitment to the project.
