RTI is seeking a Private Sector Engagement (PSE) Specialist for the two-year USAID-funded, Sustainable Fish Asia (SUFIA) Local Capacity Development program. The goal of this program is to improve the management of marine biodiversity and fisheries resources in the Indo-Pacific region by reducing unsustainable fishing and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This position will work remotely but the preference is to be based in Bangkok, Thailand or an ASIAN capital city. The program will have two primary areas of activity: (1) conduct organizational capacity assessments and deliver capacity development services to two regional fishery support organizations; and (2) conduct private sector engagement assessment for the fishing industry in Asia. 

The PSE Specialist will lead the work on SUFIA program area two: conducting a private sector engagement assessment for the fishing industry in Asia. This will be a senior level position, and candidates should have a proven track record of independent research, writing, and engagement of private and public sector actors in the fishing industry. Thai nationals are strongly encouraged to apply.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct the detailed analysis of how USAID and the SUFIA program partners’ can collaborate with and engage the private sector to increase programmatic goals and long-term viability of development in the fisheries sector.
  • Navigate ways to deepen USAID and the SUFIA program partners’ engagement with the private sector and to expand the regional approaches focused on market-driven solutions in the fisheries sector.
  • Assess relevant market-based and enterprise-driven opportunities, emerging from the previous USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership Activity and other regional initiatives, and to identify and come up with concrete recommendations on opportunities to engage the private sector in the fisheries industry within Asia, in particular Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
  • Organize and conduct in-person and virtual events that bring together government, civic, and private sector actors aimed at ensuring proper compliance and increased investment in sustainable fishing in Asia. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional and practical experience working with and researching the private sector in the Asia region, specifically in the fishing industry and including knowledge of regional organizations and development agencies.
  • Advanced degree in Business, Natural Resource Management, Biology, or related fields.
  • Understanding of the private sector context for fishery management in Asia, in particular labor issues, the regulatory framework, sustainability, and conservation.
  • Excellent research, statistical analysis, analytical, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Experience researching and on the fishing industry in Asia highly preferable.
  • Must be fluent in English at a professional level in both writing and speaking.
