Internship: climate change, gender and migration

Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Internship duration: 6 months
Application deadline: 15 June 2021, 23:59 Bangkok local time

SEI Asia, based in Bangkok, has a diverse team of multinational experts that integrates scientific research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships, and influence policy for resilient development. It focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.

SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have inked a long-term agreement to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia.

The role

Environmental change and stresses are felt by all, but they do not affect all people equally. Social and gender inequalities shape people’s vulnerabilities to environmental shocks and stresses, weakening their capacities to realize their well-being and security. Social inequality is characterized by multiple and intersecting social identities of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, age, ability and class that translate into privilege for some, but disadvantage and marginalization for others. These are shaped by political, economic and cultural dynamics of power and affect the capacities of people to achieve sustainable development and well-being.

In this context, the SEI Asia Cluster on Gender, Environment and Development (GED) works towards achieving transformative and socially inclusive sustainable development through rigorous research that informs key environment and development policy agendas. A key focus area is on the topics of environmental change, human mobility and migration. Our team applies an intersectional lens on gender equality, social equity and poverty and uses participatory methodologies that strive towards social and environmental justice.

Key duties and responsibilities

We are seeking an independent, creative and highly motivated individual to join our team and support several ongoing projects in the field of climate, gender and migration:

  • “Creating a Migration and Mobility Hub at SEI”. SEI has a growing body of work exploring the interlinkages between climate change and migration. The intern’s main task will be to support the development of this portfolio across SEI centers.

The intern will also provide support for tasks on several other migration-related projects as appropriate:

  • CREST – Corporate Responsibility in Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking. The overall objective of CREST’s environmental migration project (in partnership with the International Organization for Migration) is to enhance knowledge on the international labour migration – environment nexus by focusing on the role of businesses across selected migration corridors in Asia.
  • HABITABLE – Linking Climate Change, Habitability and Social Tipping Points: Scenarios for Climate Migration. This EU H2020 project involves 21 partners across the world to investigate how and to what extent climate change affects the habitability of socioecological systems and transforms current and future migration patterns. SEI Asia leads the work package on gender and social equity.
  • Environmental change, Covid-19 and (im)mobility: A case study of Myanmar migrant workers in Samut Sakhon, Thailand. This research seeks to understand how the migratory patterns of migrant workers are impacted by disasters (such as the Covid-19 pandemic and environmental hazards) and related disaster risk reduction measures, with a case study in Samut Sakhon, Thailand.
  • SCF2 regional event on gender and migration in a changing climate. Through SEI’s Strategic Collaborative Fund, our cluster will support a regional event on the interlinkages between gender, climate change and migration.

We envisage you contributing towards the intended outcomes of these projects as follows:

  • review academic and grey literature
  • analyse policy and planning documents
  • support data collection and analysis
  • participate in engagement activities, e.g. project workshops.

You will join a diverse, friendly and fun team dedicated to their work. You will also have the opportunity to learn about other projects and programs at SEI Asia related to a broad range of environment and development issues and connect with our external partners.
