Summary

OUR PURPOSE:

The Cotton On Foundation is passionately driven to deliver quality education for children and young people. We mobilise communities to ensure this purpose becomes a reality through the implementation of our Quality Education Model. We do this via meaningful work that is measurable, built on strong relationships and changes lives. We will ignite the passion in every child, community member and COF team member to champion this movement and change for the better.

At the Cotton On Foundation our vision is to empower youth, mobilise communities and build futures. Currently our project focus is on education as a means to achieving this vision, and in particular we are committed to creating 20,000 education places by 2020.

We are striving to exceed the government standards for learning and we recognise that teachers and their professional development are key to achieving this. Cotton On Foundation schools and teachers are leaders in quality education.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Early Childhood Education Mentor is vital in contributing to the Teacher Mentor and Teacher development program. The Early Childhood Education Mentor is an asset to the mentoring project  and is required to provide regular, detailed reports to the lead Mentor on observed teacher  challenges, achievements and opportunities, and recommend areas of required teacher development based on needs identified in lessons and whilst at the schools. The Early Childhood Education Mentor  is to contribute to the development of workshops and facilitate as required.

He or she must be conversant with teacher education policies and have experience in developing school support mechanisms on learning and teaching components.

The Early Childhood Education Mentor will be an expert in their field and spend approximately 25 hours in schools each week. He/she will nominate areas of teacher development to focus on each month (or as required), document teacher progression and challenges, and develop responsive plans. This will also ensure smooth monitoring and reporting in order to track the Cotton On Foundation’s progress against set objectives as well as contribute to the potential scaling up of the project.

Job Specific

  • SUBSTITUTE TEACHER REQUIREMENTS
  • The Early Childhood Education Mentor will be contracted to COF and will work five days per week, four of which will be spent in five allocated COF-supported schools to increase the quality, effectiveness and implementation of classroom instruction. Responsibilities include:
  • Visit and support approximately three nursery and / or primary teachers in school per day. In addition, each teacher shall be exposed to mentorship at least two times per month by the Early Childhood Education Mentor for one hour per visit. Given this Mentor will be the constant mentor for those teachers, relationship building and trust is paramount for teacher comfort, openness, reflection, sharing and collegiality. It’s important for Mentors to remain and ultimately contribute emotionally and professionally to the improved wellbeing and performance of these teachers. During this period, the COF Education Mentor will observe, monitor and participate in both planning and classroom demonstration activities and comprehensively report on all areas of progress.
  • Work with schools and other partners to support teachers in transitioning to use Thai ECD curriculum for the nursery classes
  • Share your personal experience as a Senior Teacher and leader to inspire teachers. Act as a facilitator for change in order to engage teachers in reflective thinking while looking at their own instructional practices critically and analytically.
  • Identify locally available resources to support teachers and learners in the development of various resources such as flash cards, counting charts, literacy materials and use of readers to enhance classroom instruction and student achievement.
  • Regularly contribute to detailed reporting with the Education Mentor for the school Head Teacher and the COF Thailand Project Manager. This will include reports on teacher and student challenges, achievements and opportunities, and provide recommendations (such as classroom improvements, localised education enhancements and modified teaching styles to suits various learning styles). It will also include the identification and documentation of monthly COF ‘Most Significant Change’ stories for learners, teachers and community members.
  • Work with team members to complete wrap up of projects, ensuring external evaluations are completed and final reports of the highest quality are delivered to Cotton On Foundation and other donors and partners.
  • Contribute to the development of criteria for the COF Teacher of the Year awards.
  • Monitor use of positive discipline methods in the classroom, and uphold an absolute rejection of corporal punishment.
  • Commitment to child-centred learning.
  • Conduct Learner and Teacher Experience Surveys as required by the COF Thailand Project Manager.
  • Alongside the Project Manager and Lead Mentor, be an active participant in school QES meetings and recommend and support in School Action Plans.
  • Provide additional support to the Thailand Education team as well as any translation tasks, as necessary
