Field Operation Manager

Job title:             Field Operation Manager

Location:            Mae Ramat, Tak Province 

                          (50% of the time in Mae Rama office and the remaining 50% in the remote sites.)

Status:                Full time

Probation:          SMRU can terminate employment at 3 months if performance inadequate

Report to:           Unit Director, Project Coordinator

Staff under supervision:  Field Operation Team

The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome, UK. The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalised populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

SMRU is based in Mae Ramat, Mae Sot, Tak, Thailand where the head office, main laboratories are situated and it provide services along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Project Background:

The Malaria Elimination Task Force (METF) was launched in 2014 to respond to the threat of drug-resistant malaria. The main objective is to eliminate drug-resistant malaria from the communities in Kayin State and Thai-Myanmar border.

Responsibilities:

This position will be mainly responsible for

  • field operational planning, scheduling, and monitoring of the activities on sites
  • engagement with the local stakeholders and health authorities
  • coordination across various program teams including logistics, pharmacy and data management and other departments
  • coordination and supervision of the field-based project team including the field coordinators, and supervisors down to the village malaria post workers to ensure uninterrupted malaria services at the village malaria posts.
  • supporting all the malaria elimination activities such as malaria surveys, training, investigation of outbreaks, etc.

Education/Work Experience and skills

  • Degree or certificate in public health or nursing or equivalent qualifications.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in the public health sector 
  • Good geographical knowledge of the Karen districts (Mutraw, Hpa-Ann and Duplaya)

Essential criteria

  • Fluency in Karen language
  • Communicable language skills in Burmese and English
  • Able to work independently while being a strong team player
  • Able to use Microsoft office 365
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Culturally sensitive with the ability to work with a multi or cross-cultural team and understanding of the situation along the Thailand-Burma border and inside Burma

Others (Desirable)

Previous experience working in malaria fields or other health projects
