National Associate Legal Adviser - Thailand
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights.
The Asia Pacific Regional Office is seeking to recruit a National Associate Legal Adviser for the Thailand programme. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated human rights lawyer with a strong knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law, and practical experience of human rights legal advocacy and the legal system of Thailand. The candidate must have a well-developed network in Thailand amongst local NGO's and relevant government agencies. The position is based at the ICJ’s regional office in Bangkok.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting directly to the International Legal Adviser (ILA) for Thailand and working closely with the rest of the team in the Asia & Pacific Regional office and counterparts in other ICJ offices, the National Associate Legal Adviser has the following responsibilities:
Implement all aspects of the ICJ's Thailand Programme using the full range of innovative ICJ advocacy strategies and legal interventions, conduct field research related to law and justice, prepare legal reports, memos and court submissions, conduct trial observations, conduct capacity building and training for partners;
Monitor and analyse legal developments concerning human rights and the rule of law situation in Thailand;
Represent the ICJ externally, which includes engaging in advocacy activities and building active relationships with NGO partners, the Thai judiciary, relevant Government agencies including the Ministry of Justice, academics and the wider human rights community in Thailand.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have:
Education & Experience
University degree in law or a related field from a Thai university. Further academic studies in international human rights law or international humanitarian law highly desirable;
Experience working as a human rights lawyer in Thailand and other practical legal and advocacy experience at the national level working for the implementation of international human rights standards.
Essential Skills
Good knowledge of human rights law and jurisprudence in Thailand;
Strong political judgment and the proven ability to develop and carry out innovative advocacy and legal work;
Strong analytical and organisational skills;
Proven communication skills and policy experience;
Openness and flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing priorities and needs;
Fluency in written and spoken Thai and English, and proven legal writing skills. Working knowledge of Yawei or Malay is desirable;
Willingness to travel within Thailand;
Demonstrated commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
