Position:             Senior Technical Advisor – Nature-based Solutions 

Work Location: Washington DC or Remote, preferably SE Asia 

Type:                  Full-time

 

Position Summary 

The Senior Technical Advisor for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) will support Pact globally to develop and/or refine specific service offerings for private sector actors primarily around low emission development strategies in sustainable landscapes and commodity value chains. This will include advancing on existing Pact-led work in Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries. They will effectively provide technical assistance to companies designing and implementing nature-based solutions that are profitable, enhance sustainable land management, and contribute to reducing emissions. They will be responsible for cultivating working relationships with private and to a lesser extent public sector actors to spur collaborative efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by catalyzing private finance to upscale and drive investment in the agriculture, forestry, conservation, and other land-uses sectors toward low-emission, climate-resilient, profitable business models. 

They will contribute to ensuring successful functioning of project and new business activities, including working with the Pact’s global energy and environment team to provide quality technical assistance; co-create engaging concepts, pitch decks, and proposals; and develop impactful thought pieces for publication and/or presentation to international audiences.  Occasional travel in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and globally is expected for this position.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop service offerings:

  • Craft, in coordination with Pact’s energy and environment team members, low-emission, climate-resilient strategies for businesses using tailored tools and/or methodologies and technologies. 
  • Lead assessment of financing needs of private sector partners and assist them to complete studies and assessments required to secure financing. 
  • Develop concepts, pitches, and proposals in collaboration with other Pact Impact Area staff and support to refine Pact products and services for private sector clients. 

Pipeline development  

  • Strategically plan and lead pipeline development process, including, but not limited to evaluation, planning/implementing due diligence, drafting and negotiating of terms of references for memorandum of agreement, development of SOWs for technical assistance, and deal structuring for businesses in the pipeline.  
  • Provide expert assistance and thought leadership to support business development and work with other technical staff to identify promising business models and enterprises in sustainable and economically viable agriculture, forestry, and other land use sectors.  

Partnership creation and coordination 

  • Build productive partnerships with private sector actors with the potential to sustain and scale up low emission investments (e.g., in land-based commodities), working in concert with Pact’s Business Development Private Sector Engagement team to develop and refine lists of prospective private sector clients.  
  • Support activities with internal and external partners to enable Pact to develop relationships and secure business opportunities with prospective private sector partners. This may include, but is not limited to, support for the preparation of market research, knowledge products, and delivery of presentations in conferences.  

Program management 

  • Supervise consultants and partners to deliver technical assistance via/for NbS projects. 
  • Contribute to the preparation and submission of discrete project reporting (e.g, work plans and periodic progress reports) and assist with monitoring relevant program indicators and evaluating program results with support of the LEAP team.

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree and 9+ years relevant technical experience or equivalent combination of education and specialized technical expertise in natural resource management, natural resource economics, nature-based solutions, natural capital, low emissions development strategies, sustainable forestry, climate smart agriculture, or related field.

Additional Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated specialized technical expertise in developing nature-based solutions projects and programs, with a proven ability to deliver high quality low emissions advisory services for private sector companies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of partners, including private sector companies, government officials, financial institutions, and other key stakeholders.  
  • Ability to travel to and work in target countries across the globe.  
  • Sufficient relevant experience in the field to perform effectively under complex operating environments.  
  • Excellent written and oral communication.   
  • Fluency in English. Must be able to speak, read and write English fluently. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Experience developing partnerships with private sector actors; experience with the coffee sector a plus.
  • Knowledge of environmental/natural resource policy and practice.  
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience across Southeast Asia and/or Latin America.  
  • Demonstrated competence in project management, with knowledge – and ideally existing network - of private sector clients, donors and foundations procedures.   
  • Prior experience working on programs in relevant areas such as sustainable natural resource management, sustainable landscapes, agriculture, private sector investment or related field. 
  • Experience overseeing and coordinating with international field offices preferred.
