With funding and support from Kindernothilfe (KNH), a German child rights NGO active in Thailand, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), BDF is implementing a 3.5-year project, entitled Building Social Impact in the Thai construction sector, to scale up the systemic impact work and the BSI Initiative. The project objective is that up to 14,000 migrant workers use the improved infrastructure in 36 construction camps and start to use public services for themselves and their children. The project area is the Bangkok Metropolitan Region.

The project has four key outputs 1) Camp managers and camp bosses from 12 construction companies apply the BSI Framework for Action and the related BSI Toolkit; 2) Relevant Thai Ministries create an enabling environment for integrating business and human rights principles in the construction sector‘s value chains; 3) Camp managers, camp bosses, camp residents, and the local service providers work together for the access to services for workers and children in the camps; 4) The voices of migrant workers and their children are incorporated into the BSI initiative.

To monitor and evaluate the success of the project, it is necessary to conduct baseline surveys in construction camps where BDF has so far been granted access by construction companies which have joined the BSI Initiative. For the purpose of understanding migrant workers and their families' current situation in terms of accessing public services, a survey will carried out with migrant workers to establish a baseline for the following two indicators;

  • Percentage of the adults, as well as their child(ren) from the camps, own health insurance, and now use adequate government medical assistance during sickness and injury.

  • Percentage of school-age children from the camps are enrolled in public school and attend school

  • Conducting data collection activities with Burmese-speaking migrant workers in construction camps in Bangkok

  • Attending the training for enumerators at BDF’s office in Bangkok, Sukhumvit 42

  • Conducting a practice survey in a construction camp in Bangkok

  • Conducting surveys in approximately 8 construction camps in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and Nonthaburi between Mid-November and late December 2023

    • Each individual survey is estimated to take between 5 and 10 minutes, with each data collector interviewing around 6-8 participants per camp

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Experience in performing quantitative and qualitative data collection in the field is a strong asset

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations is an asset

  • Native or fluent Burmese speaker

  • Must be able to speak and read either advanced Thai OR advanced English

  • Must be in possession of a Thai tax ID and a valid Thai Work permit OR is a Thai National (due to internal processes Thai nationals are preferred)

  • Able to work as part of a team and under constrained timelines

  • Flexible to conduct surveys on weekday evenings and/or weekends

Interested applicants should email their CV (in either Thai or English) and a short cover letter explaining why they would be suitable for the role as well as their daily rate for conducting surveys (applicants should factor in the cost of transport to the BDF office) in THB ASAP to james@baandekfoundation.org and naphaphon@baandekfoundation.org
