Capacity Building of Community Leaders
in Environmental Management in the Tenasserim Corridor,
Ratchaburi Province

Supervised by: On-iriya Fugthaworn

Duration:           1 February – 30 June 2025

Major Responsibilities

The consultant/s will develop a strategic plan for the area as "a hub for organic agriculture and eco-tourism, emphasizing sustainability through the conservation of natural resources, particularly forests and watershed areas, improve tourism management practices to revitalize the area and ensure long-term sustainability.

Background

Based on the socioeconomic survey conducted in two communities within the Tenasserim Corridor, specifically Baan Phapok and Tako Pidthong in Tambon Suan Phueng, Suan Phueng District, Ratchaburi Province, during late 2024, data was systematically collected and analyzed to identify development opportunities and gaps. The study also developed community-driven proposals aimed at enhancing local well-being through participatory approaches. The survey revealed that most of the area is designated as a conservation zone and is linked to national security due to its proximity to Myanmar. Most residents do not own land, which affects forest land management and utilization, as it is subject to various legal protections.

The Suang Phueng sub-district, located near Bangkok, stands out as a significant tourist destination with notable development potential and opportunities. A strategic development goal has been outlined to position the area as "a hub for organic agriculture and eco-tourism, emphasizing sustainability through the conservation of natural resources, particularly forests and watershed areas."

At the same time, addressing challenges in Baan Phapok, particularly in the Mon Market, is critical. The market is currently experiencing a decline in visitors due to the absence of effective tourism management systems and limited support for enhancing knowledge on waste management. As such, there is a clear responsibility to promote conservation efforts and improve tourism management practices to revitalize the area and ensure long-term sustainability.
