Consultancy Assignment
Tree nursery development and management, and forest restoration techniques
Supervised by: Demis Galli
Duration: 4-5 and 15-16 May 2025
1. Background of consultancy assignment
The formation and legalization of Community Forests (CF) in Thailand is a good step forward decentralization of forest protection where locals are not only the managers but also the direct resources beneficiaries. However, often CF are not managed appropriately or were previously degraded, requiring some level of restoration or improvements that will enhance not only ecological services but also provide more income for locals. To improve or enhance forest conditions, restoration or enrichment planting might be necessary along with other management practices, however often locals miss either knowledge or budget or both. Providing capacity should at least improve their knowledge on specific tree production for local needs. CF can usually receive free seedlings from local RFD nurseries, but the species selection can be often inappropriate or not sufficient.
2. Objective of the consultancy
The consultant will provide training session for CF participants on the development and management of a tree nursery. Participants will learn how to efficiently construct and run a nursery for seedlings production.
3. Scope of work/ Major responsibility
The consultant will conduct all activities in coordination with WWF Thailand on:
3.1 To conduct a training session for 2 CF (even though villagers from other CF might be also participating) on importance of ecosystem restoration.
3.2 To teach how to efficiently construct a tree nursery for seedlings production and all the tools and equipment needed, including preferred media and polybag size for best root development.
3.3 To provide knowledge on best practices on: seeds collection, extraction and treatments, germination, potting and pest control.
3.4 To provide knowledge on: tree planting, maintenance and monitoring of forest trees
