A centre of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) based in Bangkok, SEI Asia has a diverse team of multinational experts who integrate scientific research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships, and influence policy for resilient development. SEI Asia’s work focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.
SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have an agreement to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia. The key areas of collaboration are intellectual engagement for joint research applications and fund mobilization, lectures and seminars for CU students, post-graduate supervision and examination, and CU–SEI employee links.
Since April 2025, SEI Asia, in partnership with the Chulalongkorn University Social Research Institute (CUSRI), has hosted the Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA). Launched at the UN Climate COP26 in Glasgow, the ARA is a global coalition working to increase investment in and capacity for action-oriented research that enables effective climate adaptation. The Alliance seeks to drive change at the scale and urgency that science demands, envisioning by 2030 a world where policymakers, practitioners and climate-vulnerable communities regard the research community as a highly valued partner.
The ARA brings together research funders, development donors, governments, civil society, philanthropic organizations and the private sector, alongside diverse research organizations ranging from universities and think tanks to grassroots implementers. Collectively, members collaborate to deliver innovative, user-driven solutions for adaptation and resilience, ensuring that action-oriented research produces tangible and meaningful benefits for those most at risk from climate impacts.
In light of the recent shift of the ARA Secretariat to SEI and CUSRI, the primary immediate priorities are to (1) ARA’s membership base and (2) secure long-term funding to sustain the network. This new role of ARA Membership Engagement and Learning Coordinator will mainly support priority 1, with the expectation that a more engaged membership, which recognizes the network’s unique values, will either directly or indirectly help secure new funds.
The Membership Engagement and Learning Coordinator will play a central role in enabling learning, collaboration and knowledge exchange across the ARA’s diverse membership of adaptation practitioners and knowledge actors. The postholder will have climate change adaptation expertise to support the design, facilitation and documentation of learning journeys – processes through which members reflect, share and co-create actionable knowledge to advance responsive, inclusive and equitable adaptation outcomes, especially for vulnerable groups and communities in the Global South. The learning journeys will build on established best practice, contributing to the knowledge base on how adaptation inventions can take off, stick and make a difference on the ground.
The Membership Engagement and Learning Coordinator will steward the ARA’s Communities of Practice and related engagement mechanisms, and spaces where members connect meaningfully, collaborate on joint initiatives and co-develop innovative approaches. The role requires excellent facilitation, knowledge brokering and synthesis skills to foster trust, inclusivity and productive dialogue across cultures, disciplines and geographies.
The Membership Engagement and Learning Coordinator will be a member of SEI Asia’s Climate Change, Disasters and Development (C2D2) Cluster.
