PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Environment & Livelihoods Advisor provides senior technical expertise to strengthen WVFT’s environment, natural resource management (NRM), and livelihoods programming under the Environment & Sustainability Integrated Program Framework (IPF).
The role focuses on the design, quality assurance, and technical development of programs related to natural resource management, agriculture, and livelihoods resilience, with an emphasis on community-based approaches that support environmental sustainability and household wellbeing.
Working under the direction of the Environment & Sustainability Programs Manager, the Advisor contributes to program design, proposal development, evidence generation, external engagement, and technical positioning. The role also supports the gradual strengthening of WVFT’s capacity in climate-smart agriculture and livelihoods adaptation, without assuming ownership of disaster risk reduction (which sits under the DRR specialist role).
The position plays an important outward-facing role, engaging with government, NGOs, academia, and private sector partners to strengthen WVFT’s credibility, partnerships, and learning in environment and livelihoods programming.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership in Environment & Livelihoods (NRM / Agriculture) 30%
Provide senior technical inputs to the design and review of environment and livelihoods programs, with a focus on natural resource management, sustainable agriculture, and livelihoods resilience. Support development of technically sound approaches that are appropriate to WVFT’s current capacity and operating contexts.
Program Design Support and Quality Assurance 20%
Support the Environment & Sustainability Programs Manager in reviewing program designs, concept notes, and implementation approaches. Provide technical guidance to ensure integration of livelihoods and environmental sustainability into broader programming.
Proposal Development and Resource Mobilization Support 15%
Provide technical inputs for proposals, budgets, and donor reports related to environment and livelihoods, working closely with the Environment Resource Development Specialist. Ensure technical narratives are credible, realistic, and aligned with donor expectations.
External Engagement, Partnering, and Sector Representation 15%
Engage with external stakeholders including government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and private sector actors working on environment, agriculture, and livelihoods. Participate in technical working groups, learning platforms, and partnership discussions to strengthen WVFT’s sector engagement.
Learning, Evidence, and Innovation Support 10%
Support documentation of lessons learned, case studies, and evidence related to environment and livelihoods programming. Contribute to piloting and learning around emerging areas such as climate-smart agriculture and livelihoods resilience.
Technical Branding and Advocacy Contribution 10%
Work with Branding & Communications and the Advocacy & Partnering Advisor to develop technical content, sector narratives, and key messages related to environment and livelihoods. Contribute technical inputs to advocacy and policy engagement where relevant.
