Introduction
SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome (UK).
The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the border Thailand and Myanmar. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.
This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve.
Task and Responsibilities
Research:
- Assist in study design and methodology discussions by providing input, reviewing relevant scientific literature, attending scientific seminars, and helping prepare experimental protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Perform laboratory experiments involving malaria parasites, including isolation of parasites from infected patients, in vitro culture, and drug susceptibility testing. Duties include planning daily laboratory activities, carrying out laboratory procedures accurately, collecting and recording data, assisting with basic data analysis, and preparing activity summaries or reports.
- Support dissemination of research findings by presenting results to MORU/SMRU staff during laboratory tutorials and journal clubs, and assisting in the preparation of scientific articles as assigned.
Laboratory management:
- Maintain and update equipment inventory and support routine equipment maintenance.
- Manage supply inventory and prepare procurement requests, including drafting provisional budgets.
- Maintain sample inventory and oversee proper freezer organization and maintenance.
- Support data management activities, including designing data collection forms/logbooks, developing databases (in collaboration with the Data Department), ensuring data quality control, performing data cleaning, and entering data into databases.
- Assist in training staff members, students, and visitors on laboratory procedures and good practices.
- Assist the supervisor in implementing and maintaining laboratory safety procedures.
Essential Criteria
- Bachelor degree or higher education in Biology or equivalent field
- Fluent Thai or English
- Willingness to work in Mae Ramat
- Able to work with malaria parasites and blood samples
- Ability to work as part of multinational team
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
- Able to work under pressure
- Willingness to take part in research work
- Intermediate computer skills
Desirable Criteria
- Fluent in English, Karen or Burmese
- Experience in malaria in vitro work
- Experience in research
- Able to supervise and train other team members
