Introduction
SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome (UK).
The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the border Thailand and Myanmar. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.
This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve.
Task and Responsibilities
- Assist the supervisor with laboratory experiments involving in vitro culture of malaria parasites, including parasite isolation from infected patients, culture maintenance, and drug susceptibility testing.
- Support the supervisor in maintaining and updating laboratory equipment inventory, as well as coordinating routine maintenance.
- Assist with managing supply inventory and preparing procurement requests to ensure adequate laboratory resources.
- Assist with sample inventory management, including proper labelling, storage, and freezer maintenance.
- Support data-related tasks, including data collection, data cleaning, and data entry into designated databases.
- Assist the supervisor in training staff members, students, and visiting researchers in laboratory procedures and safety practices.
- Support the supervisor in implementing and maintaining laboratory safety measures.
Essential Criteria
- High school certificate or equivalent
- Fluent in one of the following languages: Thai, Karen, Burmese or English.
- Willingness to work in Mae Ramat
- Able to work with malaria parasites and blood samples
- Ability to work as part of multinational team
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
- Able to work under pressure
- Willingness to take part in research work
Desirable Criteria
- Fluent in other languages including Thai, Karen, Burmese or English.
- Basic computer skills
- Experience with research or laboratory work
