Job Summary:

Greenpeace needs to link and coordinate the tens of thousands volunteers we already have around South East Asia and vastly expand their number and geographic distribution, and innovate new ways of catalyzing the powerful chain reactions during which wider swaths of the public engage directly with our targets, and in which other actors in society, other organizations, and other activists stand up to be counted.

In this role you will contribute to the future Greenpeace vision of a Billion Acts of Courage by building a

powerful, connected and skilled network including volunteers, partnerships, strategic alliances and coalitions across South East Asia, which builds power and influences public discourse. 

Responsibility of this position is also to make sure that offline mobilization is integrated early in campaign/ project plans, for supporting GPSEA’s campaign objectives, and country based staff (across SEA, including Myanmar and Malaysia) in recruitment, organizing and mobilizing supporters and strengthening/ supporting the movement which we share similar values with. 

This position requires a flexible schedule, creativity, attention to detail, ability to communicate, engage and collaborate with a wide variety of audiences and partners across different cultures. 

This is a full-time position based in either Bangkok, Jakarta and or Manila. Citizens of Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines are encouraged to apply.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:

The Partnerships, Coalitions and Volunteer Coordinator mandate is to support and empower country Public Engagement Campaigners (based in Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta), and contract staff present in other SEA countries too:

COMMUNITY AND LOCAL GROUP DEVEOLPMENT/ SUPPORT

  • Build a growing bank of applied knowledge in community organizing, community coalition building, strategic alliances and other innovative offline mobilization initiative.                                                                                       
  • Develop and advise GPSEA in the area of grassroots organizing strategies, tactics and methodologies to be applied within campaigns and project work.  
  • Organize regional skill shares and the exchange or mentoring programmers across communities and local groups across SEA.
  • Create and administer community communication channels across different supporter journey pathways.
  • Create, maintain and update resources allocated internally and for external audiences.
  • Design and Implement Trainings adapted to supporter’s demands, in line with Best Practice for the community, including resources available online.

CAMPAIGN/ PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

  • Lead or Support National Staff in development of offline strategies for campaigns/ projects
  • Promote exchange and collaboration between staff and supporters in idea generation for projects.

Coalition Development

  • Organizes and facilitates coalition development and capacity building Maintains connections with other NGOS and looks for opportunities to collaborate on projects and bring attention to issues that align with GPSEA goals. Assists with implementation of community needs and resource assessments and Template development as appropriate
  • Serves as an effective spokesperson for GPSEA; represents mission of GPSEA to agencies, organizations and the general public, including media liaison and contact, and material development in collaboration with other units.
  • Establishes sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations
  • Responsible for the enhancement of GPSEA image by being active and visible and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations as required in line with GPSEA Projects
  • Collaborate with local non-profits, city officials, government agencies and other relevant partners on appropriate strategies. Build strong, long-term working relationships linked to GPSEA priority projects.
  • Maintain CMS/ database of contacts and relationships.
  • Maintain a database and minimum communications with coalitions
  • Develop clear guidelines for best practice in coalition partnership etc.

Research, responsive: - cutting edge

  • Looks for opportunities to engage new community partners and build coalition membership across SEA
  • Maintains and utilizes a working knowledge of significant developments, trends, and best practices in the field of offline mobilization/ organizing.
  • Research and evaluate relevant community data
  • Templates creation – e.g. MoU and process for checking – formalizing relationships guides (when, how, why)

  • Extensive Experience working with and understanding of civil society in Southeast Asia – in particular people’s movements.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in: working with movements, coalitions and volunteers:
  • coordinate with a collaborative team and work independently to deliver results with a diverse team
  • developing volunteers, offline mobilization, grassroots organizing and working with partners and coalitions
  • developing and maintaining robust diverse networks.
  • Experience in negotiating partnership projects
  • Knowledge and/or experience in: projects and risk
  • project management or project base organizations
  • in Risk Management and mitigation
  • Ability to connect with different cultural realities and flexibility to customize work plan accordingly
  • Knowledge and / or experience in: communications and working with diverse communities

  • Strong communication, facilitation and training/learning skills/experience.
  • Strong skills in written and spoken English (required) and another regional language (desired)
  • A commitment to direct action and the synergy between social justice and environmentalism, with non-violence as a guiding principle.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in strategic alignment and linking the direction of units/projects to organizational objectives
  • Willingness and ability to travel and a flexible approach to work.
  • A Bachelor degree or equivalent experience

Specific Work Environment

This position requires the employee to have a flexible approach and the ability to adapt and work in different and challenging work and cultural environments, which may include flexible arrangements working in challenging field and frontline work environments.

WORKING HOURS

Normal hours of work for full time Employee will be forty (40) per week or (5) days in a week, at 8 hours per day excluding an hour lunch break. This will be from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am to 6: 30 pm. Ordinary hours of work may be varied as agreed between staff and the line managers. 

LEAVE

A permanent employee will be entitled to the following leaves:

Annual Leave: 20 days

Sick Leave:  30 days

Parental Leave:  As per labor laws and Greenpeace policy

Long Service Leave: 2 months paid leave after 5 years of continuous service

Compassionate leave: maximum of 5 days for the death of significant others

SALARY

In determining salary offer for this position, Greenpeace applies its Salary Grading Process, taking into consideration the job description and applicant’s previous experience, and the organization’s salary grade.
