Introduction Bring the Elephant Home

The Asian elephant, a keystone species, is threatened with extinction as deforestation has destroyed much of its habitat, food supply and migration routes. As a result of our actions there is a good chance that we could soon lose a species that is an extremely important part of the ecosystem. The only way that we can save these magnificent keystone species is if we act now!

Bring the Elephant Home aims for an ideal world where elephants are afforded the space that they deserve. A habitat where ecosystems are balanced and where elephants and people live in harmony. We encourage local conservation leaders to coordinate conservation projects themselves. BTEH connects people, organizes training and provides the needed support to start community-based conservation projects. We make change happen, along with many stakeholders and volunteers. By planting thousands of trees, building water reservoirs, installing beehive fences to reduce human-elephant conflicts, and by using innovative conservation technology to better protect elephants. With the ambition to develop our conservation projects in Thailand, we are now looking for a dynamic and dedicated conservation manager.

Your role

Do you have a talent for creating positive change and a passion for wildlife conservation? If so, you might be the person we are looking for to join us as the new conservation manager of Bring the Elephant Home in Thailand. We are seeking a high performing candidate with experience in managing community-based conservation in Thailand. As well as understanding the challenges the Asian elephant, its habitat and communities near wild elephant habitat are facing, you have to be able to focus on results and know how to make things happen. This position will involve a diverse, challenging and exciting range of activities, including:

  • Initiating, conceptualizing and developing inspiring projects within the guidelines of the policy plan.
  • Supervising and coordinating the new Conservation Leadership Program, which has been funded by IUCN. Providing guidance and assistance for the local leaders, organizing study trips and workshops.
  • Managing and coordinating community-based conservation projects in Kanchanaburi, Chanthaburi and other human-elephant conflict sites to mitigate conflicts, such as forest restoration, beehive fencing and implementing citizen science technology.
  • Recruitment and coordination of local volunteers.
  • Fundraising for current and new projects.
  • Developing partnership with other organizations, governments, universities and companies.
  • Following policy developments, current situation on elephants and conservation issues.
  • Update our activities on the website, newsletter and social media
  • Regular reporting to the board in Thailand

We prefer a Thai candidate, or a candidate who is fluent in Thai language, who is dynamic, inspiring, creative and has a passion for our goals. You must be able to initiate and coordinate projects independently, with support from a distance, and to accept flexible working hours. People with a background in areas such as conservation and community development are especially encouraged to apply. In this challenging and independent role, you will be responsible for managing the new Conservation Leadership Program and to initiate all activities within this program. This role would suit an experienced manager. A good knowledge of the situation of the Asian elephant is essential but can be developed on the job.
