Location:        Bangkok and 2 refugee camps in Thailand

 

Organization Description

The IRC has a rich history assisting refugees to apply for U.S. resettlement, from its founding in 1933 to help vulnerable individuals escape Nazi-occupied Europe, to pioneering the Joint Voluntary Agency which assisted Indochinese refugees for 22 years, to operations in Croatia, Sierra Leone and Sudan. Over the years, IRC has processed some half million refugees worldwide for U.S. resettlement.

 

Specific Objectives

In order to improve the effectiveness of its training curriculum and to increase capacity of nutrition and health agency partner staff working in the nine refugee camps along the Thailand-Myanmar border, the IRC and TBC will work with a consultant to:

1. Develop a standardized basic nutrition training package, to include modules in attached Appendix (power point slides), with both a trainer’s and trainee’s (self-explanatory reference for participants) manual that nutrition staff can use to support their efforts to improve nutrition knowledge within the nine refugee camps along the Thailand-Myanmar border.

2. The consultancy will include development of the nutrition modules, trainer’s and trainee’s manuals, as well as leading a training of trainers (ToT) session in Bangkok, and development of a pre- and post-test evaluation to measure participants’ knowledge gain after the training.  The standardized nutrition modules will expand on what TBC staff have already developed, and will cover main nutrition topics as outlined in attached Appendix (e.g. basic nutrition, balanced diet, malnutrition, maternal nutrition, anthropometry, nutrition surveys, Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), etc.). This training will be targeted to nutrition staff with minimal nutrition expertise. The modules/manual will include:

     a. Basic nutrition technical information

     b. Key messages for each nutrition topic, including how to integrate nutrition
         into other sectors

     c. Guidelines for communicating nutrition messages, including 
         behaviour  change   communication strategies

     d. Simple participatory activities that field staff can conduct in camps
         (outlined step by step)

 

Scope of work includes:
In close collaboration with TBC Nutrition Team, the consultant will:

1. Review background material related to the TBC Nutrition Programme, the nutrition
situation in refugee camps along the Thailand-Myanmar border, and existing nutrition guidance manuals used in this and related contexts

2. Review current drafts of TBC nutrition training materials

3. With technical input from the TBC Nutrition Technical Specialist and Nutrition Program Manager, write content for trainer’s and trainee’s manuals

4. Develop and/or adapt participatory exercises for each topic/module, which are included in the trainer’s manual with specific instructions

5. Finalize modules/manual and pre- post-test evaluation (with input from TBC Nutrition Technical Specialist and Nutrition Program Manager)

6. With facilitation by TBC Nutrition Technical Specialist and Nutrition Program Manager, prepare and conduct ToT in Bangkok for TBC Nutrition Programme staff
 

Deliverables
 

1. Document of reference used in development of modules/manuals

2. Power point slides with activities per module, as well as recommendations for training  
    and educational materials for use with each module

3. Final tested English-language content and format for modules/manuals

4. Pre- and post-test evaluation

 

Duration

The consultant would be expected to complete this work between July and August 2014. The total time required is expected to be no more than 40 working days, based on an 8-hour day.

 

Agenda and Activities to be completed by the Consultant
 

1. Preparation work to be conducted (5 days in July  2014)

     a. Review the current program and organizational materials

     b. Review overview information regarding the nutrition situation in the camps

     c. Research references and materials in preparation for nutrition modules/trainer’s and
         trainee’s manual development

 

2. Development of training package  (30 days in July/August 2014)

     a. Develop 10 nutrition modules as power point slides with activities (Appendix),
         trainer’s and trainee’s manuals and pre- post-test evaluation

     b. Review final deliverable and revise according to feedback from TBC Nutrition
         Technical Specialist and Nutrition Manager

 

3. Bangkok: conduct training to TBC Nutrition Programme Staff (5 days in August 2014)

     a. Coordinate training of trainers with TBC Nutrition Technical Specialist and Nutrition
        Manager

     b. Debrief IRC and TBC of final product

     c. Conduct ToT for TBC Nutrition Programme Staff

 

Qualifications

- Minimum Masters Degree in Public Health Nutrition or similar

- Experience in developing adult education materials for developing country contexts (health and nutrition)

- Experience of the Thai Refugee Camps an advantage

- Excellent written and oral English communication and interpersonal skills

- Cultural sensitivity
