The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) exists to protect the natural world and defend our basic human right to a secure environment.

EJF is working in Thailand to end illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels and actively promote improvements to policy-making, corporate governance, and management of fisheries.

EJF is seeking to employ a new ‘Community Coordinator’ to join the Net Free Seas project to help us engage with and grow the communities we work with. This position will involve engaging with local fishing communities, recycling companies, frontline Thai government agencies to deliver key project objectives. These objectives will include identifying new fishing communities to become part of the project, engaging with existing community members and local leaders to facilitate understanding and participation, coordinating the retrieval and subsequent collection of discarded / waste fishing nets, as well as conducting field-based research on fisheries-related topics.

Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently, be adept at conducting both desk-based and field-based research, have excellent interpersonal skills, be confident in public speaking, and be prepared to travel within Thailand (often at short notice and for prolonged periods of time).

 

Post Title: Net Free Seas Community Coordinator

Type of appointment: 12 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)

Remuneration: 40,000 – 60,000 baht per month, depending on experience

Location: Bangkok and/or Andaman coast (Ranong, Phang-nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang)

This position is open to Thai citizens only.

 

Essential skills and experience:

  • Fluency in Thai
  • Medium to professional proficiency in the English language is strongly preferred.
  • A degree in any relevant discipline (journalism, social science, environmental science, marine sciences, plastic pollution, marine-based debris, etc.)
  • At least three years of relevant work experience (community development, journalism, NGOs, private sector, fieldwork, etc.)
  • Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to use desk-based internet research to gather information.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Car driving license and access to own vehicle. 

 

Desirable skills and experience:

  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrable interest in or experience working on any of the following topics: marine conservation issues; sustainable fisheries issues; the global seafood industry; plastic pollution; plastic recycling; waste management.
  • Professional camera experience (film or photography)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially in partnership engagement.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience in conducting similar projects.
