Introduction
SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome (UK).
The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak Province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.
This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve.
Responsibilities
The person selected for this job will be responsible for all activities related to laboratory administration and safety as detail below:
1) Laboratory administration
· General administrative tasks for the laboratory department, including but not limited to the following:
- Deal with laboratory queries from administrative staff and logistic (serves as first communication link between other departments and the laboratory department)
- Communicate with MRM hospital for administrative and logistic matters
- Manage laboratory document database.
- Organise and process shipments between SMRU and other laboratories.
- Support import and export procedures, including maintaining certification.
- Communication with Thai Public Health for reference laboratory identifications, external quality control schemes and laboratory registration certificates.
- Laboratory stock management
- Collect monthly and special laboratory orders (including shared material) and send to procurement and grant team
- First link between procurement team and laboratories
- Netsuite laboratory stocking:
- Preview Stock In status in NS inventory system checking from notifying material arrival.
- Identify material that need to be disposed for approval.
· Support laboratory Data Manager with equipment management when required, including:
- Liaise with Data manager about broken freezers and incubators;
- Support administrative work (broken equipment, shipping samples, etc.)
- Provide backup cover for the laboratory data manager.
- Train and supervise staff for freezer Temperature checking
- Review temperature record of freezers, fridges, incubators, temperature control rooms
2) Laboratory Safety Administrator.
· Develop and provide safety training (new and refreshers) for laboratory staff
· Manage safety training records
· Routine (weekly or monthly) Safety Equipment checks;
· Safety Committee meeting organization and minutes taking;
· Coordinating waste disposal between laboratory, logistic and Mae Ramat hospital;
· Communication with pest control company and monitoring of pest control actions;
· Develop, review and implement safety SOPs;
· Managing and maintaining Safety folder on SMRU server;
· Providing administrative support to the Safety Committee, including with quotations and orders for laboratory safety.
3) Other duties as needed and as directed by the heads of SMRU laboratories
Essential Criteria
· A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Bachelor of science, medical technology)
· Prior working experience in laboratory (clinical or research-based).
· Fluency in Thai, English (spoken and written) and Karen/Burmese.
· Computing skills – ability to work with Microsoft Office and database applications.
· Organisational skills – ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
· Able to work independently, but also able to interact well within a team environment.
· Effective communicator in both spoken and written communication.
· Flexibility in responding to requests from laboratory
· Enthusiastic and willing to be a pro-active member of SMRU team
Desirable Criteria
· Prior experience of management tasks in laboratory
