Job Title:  Director of the Karen Hilltribes Trust (KHT)

Location:  Chiang Mai, Thailand

Reports to: The board of Trustees

Salary: 30,000 GBP

Start Date: 1st March

The Karen Hilltribes Trust (KHT) is a charity working to empower Karen communities in Thailand to improve their health, livelihoods and education. The charity supports the Karen to design projects locally, leading to sustainable outcomes that improve lives while enabling them to retain their unique identity and culture. We have a strong local project team who have been working within villages and schools across Mae Hong Son province since 1987, delivering clean water to 60,000 people to date. Each year we also recruit international volunteers to teach English and assist with water projects.

The Role

We are seeking a new Director to lead the organisation through an exciting phase in its development. Registered in the UK as well as Thailand, KHT is moving its head office from York to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand to enable closer interaction between its international staff, donors and the Karen-led projects. Over the past 3 years, the charity has been successful in securing funding from its Asia-focused network of supporters as well as improving its monitoring and evaluation of projects.

Following a transitional phase during which the Director was primarily based in Thailand but operated out of the UK too, we are now seeking to make the move to Thailand permanent by recruiting a chief executive who will be based in Chang Mai. Initially, you will oversee a team of 7 Karen staff and one international who are based in Khun Yuam, Mae Hong Son. As part of the role, you will establish the new administrative head office base in Chiang Mai by recruiting local support staff, with ongoing administrative backup from the UK.

To succeed in this role, you must be a proactive individual and a strong communicator who can operate in a multi-cultural environment. The charity has an experienced team of local staff as well as a wide network of support including current donors, former volunteers, and trustees based in Bangkok, the UK and the United States. Nevertheless, this is a small, focused organisation which requires a strong and committed leader, capable of attracting funding from a variety of donors and who takes the initiative. Travel will be required as part of the role, primarily within Thailand and to the UK, while other international trips to see donor audiences are also possible.

A belief and commitment to the charity’s core values of supporting locally run, sustainable development projects are also essential characteristics sought in our new Director.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with the Board of Trustees to ensure that the charity has an operational strategy which is consistent with its mission
  • Work closely with the Karen project team to oversee an annual schedule of projects benefitting local communities

  • Ensure that the charity has sufficient financial resources in place to deliver its projects
  • Be responsible for the recruitment and management of all employees within the organisation
  • Represent the organisation in its relationships with donors and the public
  • Maintain robust operating procedures including financial reporting to ensure regulatory compliance and KHT’s reputation

Essential

  • Experience in a senior management role
  • At least 3 years working in international development
  • Confident dealing with individual donors and funding institutions
