HelpAge International Asia Pacific Regional Office is currently seeking a qualified candidate to support our work in Asia Pacific region.

 

Position:                                            Communications Assistant (PART TIME position)

Work base:                                        Asia Regional Office in Chiang Mai

Working days:                                   3 working days per week (negotiable on the preferred days)

Contract length:                               1 year-contract (with possible extension)

Salary scale:                                       20,000-30,000 THB per month (pro rata) negotiable and depending on experience

HelpAge is a global network striving for the rights of disadvantaged older people to economic and physical security; healthcare and social services; and support in their caregiving role across the generations. HelpAge has four hubs globally, working with more than 180 network members in 95 countries.

 

Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO) for HelpAge International is located in Chiang Mai. The office supports the regional Network on Ageing in its work to build understanding and commitments to respond to the challenges and opportunities that rapid population ageing creates.

 

The regional office works to influence government policy development and implementation in relation to community based care, older peoples’ organisations, social pensions, disaster risk reduction, and the economics of ageing.

 

The regional office is also working with local partners and experts in Asia region to implement multi-country projects focusing on strengthening the ageing network, country based advocacy, community driven development and technical assistance on ageing related issues in the region.

Job purpose:

The Communications Assistant will be responsible for raising awareness and visibility of HelpAge and its network on ageing issues in the region, including designing and implementing strategies to build the profile of the Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO) and promote its work in particularly multi-country project on non-communicable diseases. This will include both traditional media, and social and online media, at national, regional and international level. This role will also support network members on advocacy, communications and campaigns.

 

Key Responsibilities:

The Communications Assistant will make an integral contribution to the HelpAge network and APRO office. S/he will work with Regional Head of Network Development and Communications together with Communications Officer to create an annual work plan based on regional and country priorities.

 

Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Promoting regular and focused coverage of HelpAge activities in regional media, and cultivating relationships with relevant reporters and journalists; pitching stories as appropriate; drafting/writing press releases, responding to press enquiries, and other necessary media content
  • Collecting media coverage relevant to ageing issues which reflecting works of HelpAge and HelpAge network members in the region
  • Preparing weekly media round-up and sharing it with regional team (news and events)
  • Maintaining and managing regional media database with key media contacts
  • Organising and supporting media visits to regional and country offices, and coordinating interviews with relevant team members to showcase HelpAge expertise   
  • Planning, developing and implementing public relations/social media strategies for key events and campaigns
  • Developing a community of followers within social media networks (Facebook and Twitter) and maintaining these communications channels for the regional office
  • Developing and maintaining a catalogue of stories from the field and HelpAge research findings, in collaboration with the programme team and country offices, for use in public communications, including field visits to harvest new stories as appropriate
  • Coordinating with campaign partners in the region to provide necessary support on campaigns with regional focused  
  • Collecting and collating existing data relating to population ageing and developing online and offline data visualisation folder
  • Manage office’s photo library
  • Other duties as assigned by Head of Network Development and Communications and the Senior Management Team

 

Person Specification

The post holder will require the following competencies, skills and experience:

 

Essential:

  • Thai national
  • Experience working with media, pitching stories and writing press releases
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and their audiences, and the strategic use  of social media for public relations and brand visibility
  • Experience planning, writing and editing content for social media
  • Must be a creative, willing to learn and enthusiastic team player
  • Good written and spoken English
  • A commitment towards the following; working to HelpAge values, equal opportunities, respect and dignity, health and safety and data protection

 

Desirable:

  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, must have good interpersonal skills
  • Experience in public health and social development is a plus
  • Skill in photography and simple video production is a plus
