Climate-Smart  Soil  and  Water Management Specialist

(For Climate Change Agriculture implementation in Thailand Project)

Position: Climate-Smart  Soil  and  Water  Management  Specialist  (only for Thai citizen)

AETS in association with its partners will be participating the bidding process for an ADB project Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture for Enhanced Recovery and Sustainability of Highlands.

Large area of deforestation in northern Thailand has been practice mono-cropping of maize farms due to low farmer capacity, ineffective extension support, and weak incentives for changes. The project aims to strengthen capacity of local governments and communities to cope with climate change impacts and demonstrate climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices and technologies through following activities;

(i) baseline data assessment; (ii) demonstration of climate-smart agricultural practices; (iii) enhancing agricultural product quality, value addition and market linkages and (iv) capacity of local governments and farming communities 

QUALIFICATION REQUIRED

The specialist ideally  will  have  a  master’s  degree  in  water  resources  management,  agronomy,  climate  change  or  related  fields  with  at  least  4  years  of  relevant experience in examining water and soil management options for adaptation to climate change preferably in highland areas of the GMS. The consultant will have good skills in spoken and written English, and report writing. Working closely with the team leader and deputy team leader.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Activities:

the specialist will:

1. prepare water  and soil  assessments and  identify  priority climate-smart  soil  and  water management practices 
2. conduct modeling and cost-benefit analyses for potential adaptation measures to address water scarcity and soil infertility in project areas, and identify appropriate water harvesting and soil improvement technologies and practices
3. assess  stakeholder capacity  needs  and  gaps  for  climate-smart  water  and  soil  management in highlands and identify key actions for strengthening capacity
4. conduct  training  on  water  accounting  in  various  climate  change  scenarios  and prioritize climate-adaptive water and soil management options
5. conduct  demonstrations  on  climate-smart  soil  and  water  management, and document the process and lesson-learned
6. assist government staff in mainstreaming soil and water adaptation measures in local agricultural development plans; and
7. prepare knowledge  products  on  climate-smart  water  and  soil  management  in  highlands and promote JFPR visibility in various TA activities and forums.

JOB CONDITIONS:                                                                       

Local work contract, 9 person-months intermittent between 2021 to 2023 (with possibility to extend)
