Job title: Study nurse (Part time)

Work schedule: 2-3 days a week

Location: Mae Sot

 

Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based and receive samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border.

 

Report to:  Study investigator

Staff under supervision: None

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • To collect participant’s personal information;
  • To asses participant’s vital signs;
  • To collect medical history;
  • To collect participant’s blood specimens with venipuncture and finger prick methods;
  • To assess skin reactions to mosquito bites and adverse events;
  • To report participant’s data in the Case Report Form.

 

Essential criteria

  • Education: nurse registered in Thailand;
  • Languages: fluent in English (writing and speaking), native Thai speaker;
  • Experience: at least one year of experience as a nurse;
  • Skills: ability to communicate and interact with study participants (Thai, Thai-Karen and Burmese/Karen migrants) and other study team members (Thai, Thai-Karen, Burmese-Karen).

 

Desirable Criteria

  • Languages: fluency in Karen and/or Burmese (written and/or spoken) would be highly beneficial;
  • Experience: previous experience in clinical trials and/or working at the SMRU would be highly beneficial.
