Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome Trust, UK. The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalised populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.
SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based and received samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Tasks and responsibilities
- Referral Supervision:

- Coordinate with SMRU medical team and clinic staffs (MKT, WPA , MLA) regarding patient referrals with Thai hospital
- Participate to the development and revision of SMRU referral SOP and guidelines (processes/criteria, follow-up and feedback for all referrals).
- Check and analyze monthly bill received from Thai Health Facilities.
- Quarterly review, analyze and report all SMRU referrals to Thai hospital
- Support SMRU referral staffs and ensure that referral staffs provide an effective supports to patients referred to Thai Hospital until their departure to the sites, according to SMRU’s Referral SOP.
- Ensure a proper flow of information between SMRU’s site Clinics health workers and respective base staff, and Thai Hospital staffs.
- Ensure that SMRU rules and regulations are respected during transportation and during the stay in the Thai hospitals.
- Together with Clinical Doctors and referral staffs, conduct visits to Mae Sot Hospital to visit patients hospitalized as needed.
- Follow-up closely on patients with complex / expensive care with the support from the medical team.
- Support the referral staff when needed for translating/interpreting for patients/SMRU doctors/hospital doctors/staff in Thai and English, Karen, Burmese.
- Coordinate between SMRU doctors and Thai hospital doctors as needed to ensure patient care and ethical treatment.
- Ensure an effective coordination with partners NGO (Child’s Dream and BCMF) about patients referred to Chiang Mai Hospital: follow-up on appointment dates, outcome of treatments etc.
- Ensure an effective coordination with logistic/admin department about transportation/authorization aspects.
- Ensure proper monitoring and evaluation of the referrals in SMRU mission, including data entry, management and indicator follow up.
- Follow-up on referral expenses and feedback to SMRU doctor and administrator.
- To send Inpatient department weekly update to SMRU doctor.
- Attend meetings related to referral activities
- Administrative Assistance:
- Prepare and follows-up the sites access authorizations process for travel documents of patient referrals and SMRU Sites staff travel for training and special activities.
- Prepare and follow the authorizations needed, as for pharmacy delivery to cross border or other and specific logistic deliveries.
- Written translation of any type of documents from/to Thai/Karen/English (official letters incoming & outgoing, minutes, etc.).
- Assist in drafting the rental contracts (building, land, car, construction, etc.)
- Support on meeting arrangements, room booking and taking minutes as requested by supervisor.
- In charge for Travel arrangement for SMRU staff and SMRU visitor including booking tickets, accommodation arrangement and liaison with logistic team for local transportation.
- Assist administrator for coordination of SMRU donors and guest visit
- Assist administrator or other departments for communication with Thai government sectors and partners
- Assist staff traveling and accommodation booking and liaison with logistic team while transportation needed.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisors and/or line manager.
Essential criterial
- Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Medical Science or related field
- Fluent in Thai, English, Karen and/or Burmese
- Experience in patient referral
Desirable criteria
- An appreciation of working in a low resource situation
- Previous experience working on the Thai-Burma border
- Commitment for a minimum of 1 year
- Flexibility and capacity to integrate a multi-lingual team
