Background to the Project

In June 2021, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and the Seventh Day Adventist Churches started a 12-month Project entitled PRovide Equitable Vaccine Efforts in Northern Thailand-COVID (PREVENT COVID) that aimed at reduction of the risk of transmitting COVID-19 to maintain socioeconomic security in Thailand. The project targets over 5,000 migrants in Mae Sot, Tak Province.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a huge impact on the well-being of communities globally. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak in Thailand, migrants face a new set of challenges and vulnerabilities; the full extent to which these are affecting migrant communities remains unknown. These challenges include limited access to COVID-19 prevention and vaccine information due to lack of Thai language proficiency, barriers to reach to vaccination site due to legal status and/or transportation cost, etc. To address these issues, this project proposed to conduct a vaccine information campaign among the target population through the following activities: (1) identify target audiences and channels of communication; (2) collect, compile, translate, produce, and disseminate Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials in the languages of the target audiences; (3) Train community based Risk Communication and Community Engagement responders; (4) Form new partnerships with public, private and the social sector for vaccine information campaigns. To reinforce safe behavior practices to reduce the spread of the virus, hygiene items like cloth masks and handwashing soaps will be provided to 500 households to promote hygiene practices.

The project plans to reach at least 5,000 un-vaccinated migrants (3,000 female, 2,000 male) by accurate, updated, science based information from trusted sources on COVID-19 and its vaccines through effective Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) activities. By project end, it is expected that at least 2,500 migrants reached by vaccine information campaigns will indicate their intention to get vaccinated when the vaccine becomes available. Through effective vaccine information campaigns and continuous promotion of safe health behaviors, the targeted beneficiaries are expected to have increased opportunity to access vaccines and be able to return to work in a safer manner when safe health behaviors are practiced and reinforced by this project.

Below activities are being carried out by the project:
