Background of the project
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. The IRC has been operating in Thailand since 1975 and currently provides essential services to displaced persons in Tak, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Mae Hong Son provinces. Assistance programs encompass health, education, institutional capacity building, gender-based violence prevention, water and sanitation, income generation, advocacy, protection, legal assistance, and resettlement program.
Scope of work
The Communication Consultant will be responsible for raising the profile of the IRC in Thailand and ensuring that key messages about our work reach the widest audience possible. Based on the country strategic action plan (SAP), this role will develop an internal and external communications strategy for IRC Thailand and will lead in designing and developing information and visibility materials, such as fact sheets, situation reports, newsletters, briefing papers, and IRC Thailand website content. The consultant will develop and track implementation of donor visibility and branding plans as well as review and copy edit progress reports for various projects funded by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), and relevant private donors. S/he will develop networks contacts among humanitarian organizations, coordination bodies, and donor organizations (and, as necessary, national and international media) for more effective information sharing and communication of IRC’s activities and interests.
Deliverables:
An internal and external communications strategy and guidance for IRC Thailand.
Communication products and visibility materials, such as fact sheets, situation reports, briefing papers, newsletter, success stories from programs and field visits, high-quality photos, quotes, video material suitable for use in media and IRC Thailand website content.
Copy edits of two reports for PRM and ECHO.
Networks contacts among humanitarian organizations, coordination bodies, and donor organizations (and, as necessary, national and international media) for more effective information sharing and communication of IRC’s activities and interests.
Payment Rate and Schedule:
Total lump sum payment to be paid upon submission of the deliverables.
The final draft is to be submitted to the IRC within 10 days after the starting date.
The first draft is to be submitted to the IRC within one week after field visits. The final draft is to be submitted no later than two weeks of engagement.
The first draft of donor reports is to be submitted to the IRC on [insert]; and the final draft is to be submitted no later than [insert].
Payment will be made by bank transferred to consultant upon submission of the deliverables to IRC’s satisfaction and presentation of the invoice.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
More than five years of communications experience in internal/corporate communications, marketing or social media, preferably for the development and humanitarian aid setting.
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, journalism, marketing or public relations
Demonstrated ability to identify emerging trends in communications, develop related strategies and effectively translate them into actionable plans
Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to craft and deliver presentations to large and small groups; deep understanding of grammar, strong attention to detail and fine-tuned editorial skills
DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Ability to work independently while collaborating cross-functionally, highly organized, with strong time management skills
Easily navigates technology and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other desktop publishing tools. Experience managing an intranet is desirable
Photography and video skills; comfortable with basic video and visual content creation / editing tools
Able to work in a dynamic, multi-cultural environment and to juggle multiple priorities and produce high-quality outcomes on a short deadline
