Organizational Background
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 192-member National Societies. The overall aim of the IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” The IFRC works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises.
The IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement), together with its
member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The IFRC is led by its Secretary General, and has its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The IFRC has five regional offices in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The IFRC also has country cluster delegation and country delegations throughout the world.
The Country Cluster Delegation (CCD) in Bangkok covers four countries namely Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam and operates as one joint team to support each country’s National Society. The CCD Bangkok also provides secretariat support to the Southeast Asia Red Cross Red Crescent Networks and represents IFRC with the United Nations ESCAP and other regional organizations based in Bangkok.
The ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER) Work Programme 2021-2025 is to “enhance and support ASEAN’s disaster risk reduction and disaster management capabilities through inter-sectoral operation, capacity building, scalable innovation, resource mobilization, new partnerships, and stronger coordination among ASEAN Member States”. The AWP 2021-2025 also states that the ASEAN Safe Schools initiative is one of the ACDM’s flagship programmes on building infrastructure resilience in the ASEAN.
To promote comprehensive school-safety implementation, the Asia-Pacific Coalition on School Safety (APCSS), IFRC being one of the members, was established in 2012. The coalition’s mission is to enhance the safety of school facilities, improve school disaster management, and promote school-based education in disaster risk reduction and prevention across the countries in Asia-Pacific. APCSS partners are committed to support institutionalization of comprehensive school safety approaches for resilient and equitable education, children’s and youth protection, multi stakeholder, multi hazard and multi sector comprehensive risk management approach for healthy, resilient and equitable societies. APCSS with pooled resources from its members and intend to develop some analytical research and advocacy program to support rollout of the new CSS 2021-2030 framework in the Southeast Asian region.
Job purpose
The Southeast Asia school safety research Intern reports to the SEA Youth and Volunteering Senior Officer based in the CCD Bangkok, with a technical reporting line to the Asia Pacific Regional Office Youth Coordinator. The position works through the IFRC CCD Bangkok, but can be remotely engaged from a base within Southeast Asia.
The purpose of this internship is to provide support to the Comprehensive School Safety Framework Research in Southeast Asia in collaboration with UNDRR and APCSS partners. The role will support the consultant of the research based in Bangkok/ work remotely.
