The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals, their habitats, and communities living alongside them. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to engage in, and take action for conservation. ZSL has been supporting conservationists in Thailand since 2004 with a country office presence since 2014. ZSL’s programme in Thailand provides technical, logistical, and capacity-building support to the Department of National Parks and other local partner NGOs, with a main geographical focus in the southern Western Forest Complex.
The Country Manager will provide operational leadership to ZSL’s Thailand Programme in line with its existing projects and strategic aims, sitting within ZSL’s Conservation & Policy Programme Lead for the Strategy, Design and Impact team. The post holder will develop deep understanding of the operational support requirements of the programme and develop and collaborate closely with the Operations team and key cross-society functions at ZSL’s London HQ to design and embed tools, processes and principles that build capacity and effectiveness in operations and project delivery. The postholder will be a key representative in Thailand and will need to build and maintain positive and strategic working relations with partners. Ensure that the Thailand Country Programme office delivers appropriate contributions to achieving ZSL’s mission aligned with other programmes in the region.
Be the lead ZSL representative in Thailand and expand ZSL's presence and project partnerships in-country
Establish professional relationships with the Government of Thailand and relevant collaborators.
Work with HQ in London to lead the development, management, and implementation of the ZSL Thailand Country Strategy and ensure its continued alignment with national priorities as well as with ZSL’s mission targets.
Responsible for all projects in-country and is expected to work with the project managers to track, manage and report on the performance of every project and project officer’s responsibilities, both in terms of finance and deliverables.
Staff recruitment and management, including performance monitoring, and possibly mentoring and training.
Ensure that the Country Programme office is compliant with all Thai legislation and provide timely documentation as required by the Government of Thailand
In liaison with other appropriate staff at ZSL UK and within the Country Programme, the post-holder develops and maintains effective working relationships with international and national donors (including bilateral and multilateral organisations), to secure continued funding for the Country Programme.
Develop projects and lead fundraising proposals with the support of HQ’s Conservation Planning and Design team and Fundraising team, that align with the national strategy, ZSL’s mission and its developing strategy for the country.
Work with the ZSL Communications team to represent ZSL in the media as needed; this may include television, radio, social media and newspaper interviews.

Qualifications & Experience
Proven leadership and team-building skills
Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluating strategic plans and policy
Strong skills in project planning, management (including financial management), implementation, and evaluation; Experience working with government and with donors/government aid agencies is beneficial
Experience working in Thailand and/or other countries in Southeast Asia
MSc or higher qualification in an appropriate field is required
Proven experience in staff management and development
Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Thai necessary for this post
Strong conservation or management background
Solid understanding of the global development sphere with specific reference to conservation issues in Thailand and Southeast Asia
