Organizational Setting
The Mae Tao Clinic (MTC) is an internationally renowned community-based organisation (CBO) that provides and advocates for an equitable and essential health system, education and protection for vulnerable and displaced people living in the Thai-Burma border area and Eastern Burma. MTC addresses the needs and human rights of these people through comprehensive programs and a collaborative approach with local, national, international and government bodies.
Role Summary
The clinical consultant is a member of the management team, supporting the clinical aspects of the Mae Tao Clinic; assisting medics with complicated cases, providing training, including CME (continuing medical education) for clinical staff; liaising with Mae Sot Hospital (MSH) on the referral process; assist in the development / revision of medical policies and procedures.
Working week and location
The role requires you to work a minimum of 40 hours a week, Mon-Fri, but due to the nature of the work, it often means working outside these hours / days.
The role is based in Mae Sot, Thailand. There are occasional requirements to travel in Thailand.
Role & Responsibilities
Assist with difficult/complicated cases in the clinic
Engage in direct clinical work at a consultant level, supporting ward rounds and outpatient clinic(s), providing health staff with advice, guidance and bedside training
Take a leading role in organizing CME (continuing medical education) for all clinical staff, and build the capacity of senior staff to deliver training. Give expert clinical teaching on your specialty to all relevant health staff
Referrals
Develop and revise (annually) an MOU between the MTC and the MSH on referral processes/criteria, follow-up and feedback for all referrals from the MTC to the MSH Update
Assist with the referral of cases unable to be managed at the MTC and work closely with medical staff at MSH in accordance with the referral policy/MOU
Review/analyze all referrals to MSH on a quarterly basis with the MTC Referral Committee
Develop and revise as required medical policies and procedures
Work with the health management team to further develop the assessment of staff clinical competencies
Assist with performance appraisals
Assist with quality assurance activities such as chart reviews
Attend medical meetings - e.g. SMRU, TBC, Nutrition, CBOs and others health related meeting.
Assist the Deputy Director of Clinical Services & Training with clinical issues/quality improvement projects
Attend weekly health management meetings
Together with other Clinical Consultant take responsibility for implementing medical project work to improve patient care/outcome
Orientate and supervise all international medical volunteers/students at the MTC. Liaise with the Deputy Director of Clinical Services & Training
Oversee and support other clinical departments/areas at the MTC as required
Will be responsible to the Deputy Director of Clinical Services & Training.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
Must have medical degree and be registered in country of origin or residence
Proof of ongoing CME and registration will be required
An appreciation of working in a low resource situation
Good in spoken and written English
Highly desired
Post graduate diplomas or certificates in Tropical Medicine or relevant post
Experience in pediatric or gyneco- obstetric
Post graduate training in communicable diseases
Experience with quality assurance issues

Master of Public Health
ACLS BCLS ATLS
Previous experience working on the Thai-Burma border
Commitment for a minimum of 1 year
Flexibility and capacity to integrate a multi-lingual team
Administrative arrangements
Mae Tao Clinic is a low resource environment.
A salary of 40,000 THB/month (approx. US$1150/month). Additionally, one annual plane fare to your nominated home base will be given after one year of service.
