SMRU Background
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:
i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.
iii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
iii. To advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.
Job title: Entomology Technician (1 position)
Location: Mae Sot, Tak Province
Responsibilities
Shoklo Malaria Research Unit has a laboratory position available for an enthusiastic person interested in entomology research. We are seeking for full time technician to work in the new insectarium with malaria vectors. The post-holder will be responsible of rearing Anopheline mosquitoes which will be used for experiments with malaria parasite.
- Rearing Anopheles mosquitoes from larvae to adult
- Microscopy
- Dissecting mosquitoes
- Harvesting malaria sporozoites
Essential Criteria
- Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology , Biology Science , Insectary , Entomology or equivalent
- Thai national (or fluent in Thai)
- Fluency in English
- Willingness to learn different techniques
- Willingness to live in Mae Sot
- Ability to work as part of multinational team
- Able to work under pressure
Desirable Criteria
- Previous mosquito experience or other insect experience
- Occasional work during weekend
- Experience in research
