Position: Programme Officer in the Communications and Advocacy Team

Monthly Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and work experience in the relevant field. Salary range is from THB 45,000 to 60,000 (approx. USD 1200-1700), and secondary benefits such as House Rent Allowance, Medical Benefits, Relocation Allowance if the person is relocating to Bangkok and Reimbursement of air fare to take up the position in Bangkok      

Duration: Minimum 2 years (6 months’ probation period)

About us:

The Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW) is a think-tank, and a progressive and cutting-edge Alliance committed to work for changes in the political, economic, social and legal systems and structures which contribute to the persistence of trafficking in persons and other human rights violations in the context of migratory movements for diverse purposes, including security of labour and livelihood.

We promote a human rights based approach in achieving our mission to defend the rights and safety of all migrants and their families against the threats of an increasingly globalised and informal labour market.

We have over 100 member organisations based in different parts of the world. The International Secretariat (GAATW-IS) is based in Bangkok, Thailand and has a small but very committed team of people. The GAATW-IS currently works on themes of Access to Justice, Accountability and Power in Migration and Work. We also publish a bi-annual peer reviewed journal called Anti-Trafficking Review. While member organisations work with women, children and men, GAATW-IS has always focussed on the rights of adult women in the context of labour migration.

What we expect from you:

You will need to have a critical understanding of the current labour migration regime and the way it impacts on the rights of all workers, especially women migrant workers. You will need to have excellent comprehension and communication skills in English to be able to process a diverse range of publications and write for different audiences. As a Programme Officer in the Communications and Advocacy team you will work in close collaboration with two other colleagues. You will cooperate with other staff as well as GAATW member organisations on specific projects. You will receive support from the International Coordinator as well as external advisors of GAATW-IS. 

You and your team will be responsible for developing the communications and advocacy plan of GAATW in consultation with our advisors.  You will play an important role in bringing out GAATW’s key advocacy messages in international and regional discussions and in building the profile of GAATW in external settings, ensuring that the organisation’s experience and expertise are well communicated and consistently presented.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Together with the team, develop and implement a clear and concise communications plan for the organisation in line with its strategic directions.

Lead in the crafting of advocacy-oriented communications in coordination with other colleagues and member organisations.

Develop sharp and clear commentaries, press statements, op-ed articles, and other communication materials needed for timely advocacy response.

Actively monitor news related to anti-trafficking and labour migration issues from print and broadcast media, and identify possible areas of collaborative advocacy work within the Alliance.

Review and proofread all publications produced by the organisation to ensure GAATW branding and that communication guidelines are followed.

Take the lead in organising media outreach and respond to media inquiries quickly and effectively.

Evaluate results and impact of GAATW communications activities and ensure a wide reach of GAATW research findings and recommendations.

Facilitate discussions with the Working Group on Communications and Advocacy in order to support the overall outreach and communications objectives of GAATW.

Support, when needed, GAATW ­International Secretariat in other related ­tasks (e.g. organising workshops, research, funding proposals and representation at international events.)

Required Skills and Experience:

Post-graduate degree in journalism, communications, media or a related social or political science field.

In-depth knowledge and critical understanding of gender, migration, labour and human trafficking from a human rights perspective.

Superior written and oral communications skills and a high level of competence in English, with the ability to edit to an academic standard, as well as to write and edit in an accessible style for NGO constituents.

Three to five years of experience of writing about and advocating for human rights and workers rights’, especially rights of women migrant workers.

Experience in providing communication support to colleagues working on thematic projects, including editing their reports and helping them write blogs/op-eds and articles.

Experience in using various social media platforms for knowledge sharing and networking.

Knowledge of other languages, such as Spanish or Arabic, is an advantage.

Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.

Linkage with relevant civil society organisations and social movements is an advantage.

Competencies:

Ability to analyse, integrate and/or abridge diverse information from varied sources and produce crisp and sharp reports/articles.

Ability to work strategically and respectfully with diverse stakeholders towards a key objective, i.e. familiarity with working effectively with both UN representatives as well as grassroots organisations.

Accountability and the ability to deliver on agreed tasks to a high standard.

Ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.

Ability to work in a multicultural environment and with people from a diversity of regions, professional backgrounds and levels of authority.

Willingness to travel, as required.
