UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, seeks a volunteer legal intern to assist the Protection Unit in its Mae Sot Field Office. This is an unpaid internship for law students at the graduate level (JD or LLM) or recent graduates at the undergraduate (LLB) or graduate level.
Availability of the Internship: As soon as possible.
Duties and Responsibilities may include:
In coordination with other members of the Protection Unit, coordinate with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), Community-based Organisations, and Camp Committees to identify survivors and perpetrators of rights violations in temporary shelter areas (camps) and to facilitate appropriate response;
In coordination with other members of the Protection Unit, support the activities of Community Communication Network (CCN) in the temporary shelter areas in detention monitoring activities and identifying and reporting protection incidents;
Support logistical arrangements, including document preparation and arrangements for travel and interpretation, for cases requiring facilitation to government services, such as the Thai police, public prosecutor, Mae Sot prison, and Mae Sot court;
Assist with preparation and filing of protection incident reports;
Enter data in the registration/proGres database on new protection incidents and case management updates, as well as updating special needs codes;
Provide counseling to refugees and asylum seekers with guidance from the supervisor;
Attend and report on conferences, workshops, and coordination forums on refugee, asylum, and legal or protection issues;
Draft relevant reports, for approval of supervisor, as needed;
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience:
Excellent oral & written communication skills. Strong legal analysis skills.
Knowledge and experience of Thai criminal justice system and procedures required.
Course work in refugee law, international human rights law, or equivalent experience in asylum, refugee, or international human rights practice (preferred).
Ability to work in multi-cultural environment. Ability to partake in daily travel to temporary shelter (camp).
Fluency in Thai and English required; fluency in Karen or Burmese (preferred).
Duration: A full-time internship is available for a minimum of three (3) months and maximum of six (6) months.
