Position: Psychosocial Advisor (1 open position)

Handicap International (HI) seeks a Psychosocial Advisor based in Mae Sot, Tak province, with frequent travel to 3 camps in Tak and 2 camps in Mae Hong Son province.

Handicap International is an international non-governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit making organization specialised in the field of disability. It works alongside people with disabilities, offering them assistance and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant.  Since its creation, the organisation has set up programmes in approximately 60 countries worldwide and intervened in many emergency situations.  

 

Handicap International in Thailand is currently supporting projects along the Thailand - Burma border focusing on the following:

  • Rehabilitation Project: provision of functional rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities or impairments in 5 temporary shelters (Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces),
  • Disability and Social Inclusion Project: Social inclusion of People with Disabilities and mainstreaming disability into humanitarian services in 5 temporary shelters

             (Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces)

  • Growing Together Project: in 5 temporary shelters (Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces) focusing on enabling vulnerable children including children with disabilities, to develop their full potential on an equal basis with other children and acquire fundamental educational and social skills, as well as support to their family members and/or caregivers and,
  • Mine Risk Education Project: raising awareness activities on the risk of mines and explosive remnants of war are implemented in 9 temporary shelters (Tak, Mae Hong Son, Ratchaburi and Kanchanabui province)

 

Psychosocial Advisor’s general mission:

Advising, implementing and managing the Growing Together project activities especially those related to the Psychosocial component under the supervision of his/her project Team Leader and to enhance capacity of Growing Together Camp Based Staff to ensure the quality of the project activities and services, and promote inclusion and equal participation.

 

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

Responsibility 1: Plan, monitor, implement the Growing Together project activities related to the psychosocial component and ensure quality of services provision.

Aim: Ensure that the Psychosocial related activities and support are implemented on time with the adequate quality of services.

 

Responsibility 2:  Empower, build capacity and coach HI camp based staff, community staff and camp staff from other agencies on Growing Together project activities, mainly in regards to psychosocial support.

Aim: Build capacity of Growing Together community staff to be able to provide community services with high quality standards, as well as community volunteers, parents and /or caregivers and service providers.

 

Responsibility 3: Ensure communication, networking and coordination at field level for Growing Together activities.

Aim: Under the supervision of his/her line manager, ensure implementation of good practices and good communication.

 

Others: delegation

In addition, the Psychosocial Advisor may be requested to undertake any other duty that is considered necessary for the well-running of the service requested by his line manage.

 

Qualifications required/ Desired Profile:

Education: University degree in the field of psychology, special education, social work, occupational therapy or related field.

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Knowledge and at least 2 years experience in project implementation.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Knowledge and experience in report writing desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing coaching for capacity building.
  • Good skills of knowledge transmission to the teams.
  • Knowledge and experience in one of the domains of intervention of the program: local inclusive development, inclusive sports, child development.
  • Experience in disability sector strongly recommended.
  • Proficient using the Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and mail merges; email and web searches.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with partners, civil society organizations or public authorities.

Extra requirement:

  • Minimum of 2 years practical experience in a similar position.
  • Working experience in INGOs, community or refugee context is an added value.
  • Practical experience in working with vulnerable groups and local authorities is mandatory.
  • Professional experience working with refugees in the Thai-Burma border, especially parents and vulnerable children.
  • Good Experience in training / capacity building / Coaching /Counseling
  • Experience in conducting trainings (material development, training facilitation) and on-the-job capacity building of community volunteers.

Other qualifications:

  • Language: Good level of written, reading and spoken English and Thai. Knowledge of Karen or Burmese will be an advantage.
  • Active listening, sense of negotiation, self-initiative, intellectual flexibility, adaptation skills, ability to create team spirit and to support team building, autonomy in work and experience in accompanying a team and finding practical solutions.

CONDITIONS:

  • Status: national working contract
  • Duration: 1 year, renewable
  • Start: from last week of September, 2016 or  the latest 01st week of October, 2016.
