Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by the Wellcome Trust. SMRU provides medical care to Burmese and Karen migrants and refugees living along the Thailand-Myanmar border. SMRU has conducted malaria research in this population for over 20 years. More recently SMRU has commenced a programme of research focussed on other infectious diseases of regional importance, including dengue, leptospirosis, typhus, neonatal sepsis, and acute respiratory infections.
SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based. The laboratories receive samples from several clinics along the Thailand-Myanmar border. The microbiology laboratory supports the clinical activities of SMRU as well as undertaking research in the follow areas: pneumococcal carriage and disease; infant pneumonia aetiology; causes of neonatal sepsis; assessment of diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.
