The ICRC Regional Delegation in Bangkok seeks to fill the following position:
Thai Interpreter (non-Thai nationals only),
Duty station: Southern provinces in Thailand 100%,
Please note that owing to the ICRC's working procedures and principles, in particular the principle of neutrality, we cannot assign personnel to a country of which they are a national for this type of position.
As a Thai Interpreter working for the ICRC Regional Delegation in Thailand, you will be part of a team which visits detainees in order to assess their treatment and conditions of detention, and supports penitentiary authorities in their efforts to improve the conditions in prisons. You will also provide interpretation and translation to support other operational activities of the office. You will report directly to the Head of the Protection Unit of the site where you are assigned.
Main responsibilities
Translation/Interpretation
- Oral interpretation (from Thai to English, and English to Thai) during confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty, institutional dissemination work, the ICRC dialogue with authorities, activities to restore family links, and visits to the families of detainees.
- At times, conducting interviews independently
- Written translation: translation of Thai (newspaper articles, correspondence, etc.) into written EnglishAnalysis/Reporting
- Analysis and reporting of conditions of detention, the security situation, and other matters relating to the ICRC's mandateProtection Strategy
- Understand the ICRC’s Asian Regional Operational Strategy, and the Delegation’s Strategy, and oversee their implementation within the areas of Protection and Detention
- Keep informed of developments in Protection and Detention matters and maintain a strong internal network within the ICRC
- Selection requirements and experience
- University education, degree/certification in interpretation or translation an advantage
- Relevant professional experience in Thailand and 2 years of professional experience as an interpreter or translator would be an advantage
- Fluent in written and spoken English and Thai;
- International experience, preferably in the humanitarian sector, would be an asset
- Fully conversant with IT tools
- Driving licence (including manual transmission vehicles)
