Position title: Wildlife Crime Policy Officer (Thai National only)
Directly reports to: Conservation Programme Manager, WWF Thailand

Validity: One year, with option to renew for subsequent years

Background
The Wildlife Crime Policy Officer for WWF-Thailand will coordinate WWF’s efforts to work with the Thai government to close the ivory market in Thailand. The Officer will work closely with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP), other government agencies, NGOs, and other groups working on the ivory trade and other wildlife crime issues.
Major Function
- Coordinate with the agency to develop policy recommendations and an advocacy strategy related to Wildlife Crime.
- Coordinate with the DNP and other government agencies to implement the plan to close the ivory market in Thailand.
- Coordinate with WWF offices, TRAFFIC, and experts working on Wildlife Crime.
- Represent WWF-Thailand in internal and external forums/meetings related to Wildlife Crime.
Major Responsibilities
- Work with The agency and other partners to develop a strategy to close the ivory market in Thailand.
- Cooperate with TRAFFIC and other partners to monitor the ivory market in Thailand and the changes in the ivory market in neighboring countries.
- Coordinate with NGOs in Thailand to strengthen law enforcement or submit policy/legal recommendations to combat the illegal trade of other species, in addition to ivory.
- Maintain a working knowledge of political, legislative, environmental, social and economic frameworks relevant to the Wildlife Crime, and engage in critical national political and other fora relevant to the issue.
- Lead WWF-Thailand’s work on the GEF 6 project Combatting Illegal Wildlife Trade, focusing on Ivory, Rhino Horns, Tiger, and Pangolins in Thailand.
- Liaison with the Thai diplomatic mission in concerned countries: key embassies in Bangkok (i.e. Kenya, the U.S., UK, Germany, European Union, etc.).
- Coordinate with WWF offices in demand countries (i.e. WWF Hong Kong, WWF China to amplify advocacy strategy on a regional basis.
- Coordinate with WWF offices in transit countries (i.e. WWF Laos, WWF Singapore, WWF Malaysia, WWF UAE) to amplify advocacy strategy when applicable.
- Work closely with WWF offices and experts across the network on Wildlife Trade Issues, including the Wildlife Practice Lead.
- Regularly report on progress to the line manager.
- Prepare Technical Progress Reports (TPR) every six months.
- Prepare APMS reports when required.
- Prepare any other required WWF reports.
- Provide technical information, photos, and other information to the WWF-Thailand Communications team.
- Organize and oversee the work of short-term contractors where appropriate.
This TOR covers the main tasks and conveys the spirit of the sort of tasks that are anticipated proactively from staff. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary according to organizational needs.

Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- BA degree or higher, with emphasis on law or government policy
- Knowledge of Wildlife Crime issues and international organizations working on Wildlife Crime.
- Knowledge of the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and how this impacts Wildlife Crime issues in Thailand.
- Experience in multi-disciplinary teams and in building consensus, optimism and confidence in the face of challenges and pressure.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate complex issues in a clear manner to a wide variety of audiences.
- Good computer and online skills.
- Fluent in English and Thai.
- Long-term planning and analytical skills, as well as demonstrated ability to multi-task and work effectively under tight deadlines without compromising quality.
- Strong interpersonal and partnership development skills, and the ability to develop relationships with a wide range of audiences.
