Art Teacher consultant (individual or team) for
Phang Nga Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Projects
According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the first cause of children death in children in Thailand killing approximately 2,700 children per year. Over 50% of these children are less than five years of age. Water is an essential feature of Thailand’s geography and climate and children have easy access to a wide range of aquatic recreational activities and water environments. Open waters, rivers, ponds, ditches, and quarries are found in abundance in both rural and urban areas and filled with water during the rainy season. Closed vessels such as large buckets and troughs are used for water storage, cooking, and feeding livestock which represents an additional danger for children. Additionally, Thailand is prone to natural disasters including floods, tropical storms, typhoons, and tsunamis as exemplified last December (2016) when heavy rain hit Southern Thailand and flooded 12 provinces, tragically killing forty people . Despite the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) efforts to promote water safety, two out of every three children under the age of 15 (approximately 11 million children) do not know how to swim. In addition, parents, caregivers, and communities are unaware of the high rate of child drowning and have limited, if any knowledge of water safety.
In search for sustainable solutions, Save the Children International (SCI) is positioned as a leader of Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) in Thailand and takes integrated actions to protect children where they are the most vulnerable, promoting high-impact child safety Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), road and water safety projects. With growing public concerns over the danger of child drowning death, SCI Thailand is among the early front-runners in pushing the boundaries of water safety knowledge by harnessing the power of communities, family effort and citizen support to meet the emergency demand of drowning prevention. SCI implements complementary projects in Khao Lak, Phang Nga province to raise awareness, promote knowledge of drowning prevention and teach lifesaving survival swimming practices.
