The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international non-governmental organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organisation was founded in November 1980 and has a presence in over 50 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support of an international office in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term wellbeing of refugees and displaced persons, while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs. JRS offers opportunities to a wide variety of staff, local and international, while maintaining a realistic and localised scheme of salary/stipend, insurance, etc.

In Thailand, JRS manages foue programmes spread throughout urban and rural areas serving refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. JRS Thailand has field offices in Bangkok and Mae Hong Son, The main areas of work include education, psycho-social services, livelihoods, emergency assistance, advocacy and protection. Project description:

Since 1990, JRS has been one of the few humanitarian organizations responding to the needs of urban refugees and asylum seekers in Bangkok Metropolitan areas. Throughout the years, the program has evolved in response to the changing needs, approach, and government policies, and is currently focusing on supporting asylum seekers in the lengthy wait for refugee status determination as well as search for durable solutions. Emerging from service gaps and increasing needs of education for youth and adult refugees and asylum seekers within the urban context, the new JRS-Urban Education Project (UEP) focuses on assisting those who are out of existing education services through language and vocational training, scholarships, and educational guidance.

Role:

The Education Officer is responsible for facilitating and designing education activities specifically related to non-formal education system. He / She will help the project director in implementing day to day activities of the project. The two core staff members will work closely with JRS-URP and the Country Office in implementing the services for refugees and asylum seekers in Bangkok area.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide information and counseling and (if needed) assist people served in accessing to appropriate educational opportunities.
• Support Thai and English teachers in developing curriculum, preparing lesson materials, and other related activities.
• Demonstrate as a person in chart instead of teaching as required.
• Design and organize educational and peer-support activities.
• Provide information session on refugee and asylum seeker issues in Thailand in the schools.
• Conduct overall monitoring, coaching and evaluation of JRS education activities in the urban context within Bangkok and give recommendations as well as technical inputs as necessary.
• Identify education and other related needs among refugees and asylum seekers communities within Bangkok and educational facilities to ensure that the needed assistance is delivered appropriately.
• Actively contribute, through practical and technical support, to capacity development of local stakeholders in organizational management and value formation.
• Assist them in collecting and analysing accurate data, systematic filing and giving recommendations based on the data analysis.
• Actively participate in regular partnership meetings with stakeholders.
• Collaborate to ensure good communication and trusting relationship between JRS and stakeholders, in a supportive and cooperative fashion.
• Provide refugees and asylum seekers with information on successful educational strategies and management systems- best practices- to develop and strengthen effective and coherent collective education framework among local education stakeholders.
• Identify information and training opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers.
• Respect and consider cultural differences in all decision making by ensuring community responsibility and participatory approach.
• Support the direct implementation of activities in all areas of work whenever possible.
• Support active stakeholders’ decision-making, capacity development and responsibility.
• Collaborate and coordinate with other JRS team members, CBOs and NGOs especially those working in the urban context within Thailand.
• Attend meetings as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Thai Nationality.
• Fluent in Thai and English.
• Minimum Bachelor degree in social work, education, social science or related profession.
• Experience in education, curriculum development and teacher development desirable.
• Adaptability, patient, self-motivated, and service-minded.
• Understanding of and empathy with refugee communities.
• Ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural with limited resources and challenging environments.
• Good computer skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with the team.
