Role overview

 

The Project manager will manage the delivery of VSO’s EU Aid Volunteers funded BE CAPABLE Project - Building Capacities in Asia & Africa for Preparedness And Better humanitarian effectiveness through Local Engagement and volunteering project. Key is you’re working collaboratively with 9 VSO International country programme teams and VSO Netherland to manage the project and grant to achieve the outcomes within budget and agreed timeframe. Working closely with VSO Resilience Lead Advisor, professional volunteers and consultants, you will provide technical humanitarian and resilience capacity building support and influencing the organisational development in building resilience.

 

The Be Capable project aims to strengthen the organizational and technical capacity of hosting organizations within the VSO network in 9 countries in disaster preparedness, resilience building and volunteer management. This will be achieved by working towards three specific objectives:

  1. To improve volunteer recruitment and deployment standards and procedures in 9 prospective hosting organizations (PHOs)
  2. To increase the knowledge and skills of 9 PHOs’ staff in resilience and humanitarian aid.
  3. To strengthen capacity of 9 PHOs to develop disaster preparedness and management plans that will enable more efficient decision-making and effective deployment of volunteers. The project will   support 9 PHOs to enhance their volunteer recruitment and deployment policies and practices, while simultaneously building their capacity to ensure greater resilience and disaster preparedness within their programs.

Thus, the Be Capable project will benefit PHO staff and community members through stronger more resilient programs with identified areas for volunteer support.

The project will take place over 18 months across 9 countries in Asia and Africa: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nepal, the Philippines, Sierra Leone and Uganda, selected for their susceptibility to multiple hazards and the impact that increased capacity in resilience and disaster preparedness would have on their programs.

Skills, qualifications and experience

 

Experience

  • Management of £300,000+ per annum projects from inception to completion
  • Grant management and donor reporting with institutional donors, preferably including the European Commission
  • Supporting participatory, evidence-based humanitarian/resilience-related programming, preferably in a role that involved capacity development/ skills transfer.

Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to prioritise and schedule a demanding and varied workload with the ability to move flexibly within tasks. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English 
  • Proven ability to manage partnerships and relationships with a range of stakeholders up to a senior level and geographically dispersed across Asia, Africa and/or Europe. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of core humanitarian standards, humanitarian preparedness/contingency planning approaches and risk assessment to operate safely and securely in a pressure environment.
  • Ability to use coaching, mentoring, facilitation, training and accompaniment skills to develop others.
  • Demonstrates leadership with understanding of humanitarian values and principles, and motivates others to achieve results in complex situations, independent of role, function or seniority.
  • Understand the role and values of volunteering in humanitarian context.

Other

  • The role will involve frequent travel to 4 countries in Asia and 5 countries in Africa (expected to include week-long monitoring/training visits to each country per annum)
  • Commitment to VSO mission, values and People First principles, mainstreaming social accountability, social inclusion and gender into all areas of the project’s work

This is a national hire post under national terms and conditions. RIGHT TO WORK IN THAILAND IS REQUIRED. We will not be able to obtain visa and work permit to non-Thai nationals.
