The Mekong Migration Network is looking for a RESEARCH ASSISTANT to join our team. Please see the job announcement below.

 

The Mekong Migration Network (MMN) in coordination with the Asian Migrant Centre (AMC) and the Foundation for Migrants from the Mekong Neighbourhood (MMN Foundation) is looking for a full-time Research Assistant. The successful applicant will be based at the MMN Secretariat office in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The position requires the successful applicant to frequently travel within Thailand as well as to Malaysia. There is no special support (i.e. support for relocation costs, etc.) for people applying for this position from overseas or other provinces. This is a fixed term contract for 7-months.

Salary and Benefits: Local NGO rate subject to qualifications and experience.

Overview of the Mekong Migration Network

Mekong Migration Network (MMN) is a sub-regional network of civil society organizations and research institutes working on migration issues in Mekong countries. MMN’s joint areas of work include advocacy, information monitoring, research, capacity building and networking. Please see www.mekongmigration.org for more information about MMN.

 

MMN with the support of International Labour Organisation (ILO) is carrying out a collaborative research project focusing on working conditions of women migrant workers in Malaysia and Thailand’s manufacturing sector (focus on agro-processing, palm oil and rubber). The project period is from January to 5 August 2020. The primary roles of the Research Officer will be to coordinate the implementation of the project and help ensure the high quality of research. Her/his specific roles and responsibilities will consist of the following.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

General
To work as part of the MMN Secretariat team to help strengthen the MMN as a sub-regional network promoting the rights of migrant workers in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS)

 

Specific

 

  1.   Desk study, literature review

*Assist the MMN Research Officer in carrying out a thorough desk study and literature review.

 

  1.   Research Coordination

*Assist the Research Officer in organizing the project partners’ consultation meetings.

*Assist the Research Officer in coordinating with project partners to ensure timely implementation of the field research according to the agreed work plan and research design and give advice where necessary.

*Assist the Research Officer in developing concrete field research plans and questionnaires for interviews, following discussion during the research consultation meetings.

*Travel to respective research areas for follow up meetings with the project partners and/or to carry out additional interviews where necessary/appropriate.

*Provide orientation (or training if necessary) to research partners to ensure the field research is done in accordance with the plan, ethical standards and of high quality.

 

  1. Management of data gathered through the field research

*Assist the Research Officer in reviewing the interview results submitted by the field research partners.

*Encode the quantitative data from the field study to SPSS (or an equivalent program) in coordination with the Research Officer.

*Assist the Research Officer in organising the qualitative findings.

*Assist the Research Officer in preparing the summary of the findings and present them to the project partners for further analysis.

 

  1. Organising project consultation meetings and other related events

*Assist the Research Officer in organising project consultation meetings where project partners can collectively design the collaborative research project and jointly analyse the findings.

*Organise other related events.

 

  1. Preparation of the activity reports

*Assist the Research Officer in preparing highlights of the project activities MMN organises, e.g. meetings, press conferences, that we would like to draw public’s attention, for the purpose of circulating broadly using the MMN webpage, list serves, social media or other means deemed appropriate.

 

  1. MMN Webpage

*Assist the Research Officer in developing a section on the MMN webpage specially dedicated to our project on migrant women workers in agro-processing (Technical assistance will be provided to create the section but the Research Officer will be in charge of developing content).

*Regularly update the site and circulate the relevant news.

 

  1.  Advocacy

*Work as a team to develop advocacy calls concerning migrant workers in agro-processing, identify strategic advocacy targets and means, and actively promote/pursue the recommendations.

 

  1. Project reports

*Assist the Research Officer in drafting project reports to be submitted to the Regional Coordinator.

 

  1. Other tasks

*Carry out other tasks as assigned by the Regional Coordinator.

 

S/he will work as a part of the small multi-cultural team and report directly to the Research Officer and the Regional Coordinator. As a sub-regional network, the job involves frequent travel. 

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

*Proven research skills (qualitative and quantitative)

*Relevant degree or equivalent experience

*Fluency (writing and speaking) in Thai and English

*Data management skill (using SPSS or an equivalent software)

*Strong commitment to and understanding of migration and labour issues in Mekong countries

*Experience working on issues relating to labour, human rights, migration, gender or development

*Ability to work independently and as part of a small team

*Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines

*Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

*Excellent attention to detail

*Proven computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint)

*Commitment to MMN’s approach and values

*Ability to travel

Desirable

*Good written skills in English

*Some experience on website and/or social media (Twitter, Facebook etc.)

*Thoroughly review the interview results submitted by the field research partners and clarify when there is inconsistency in data.

*Oversee the process of encoding of the quantitative data from the field study to SPSS (or an equivalent program).

*Organise the qualitative findings.

*Prepare the summary of the findings and present them to the project partners for further analysis.

 

 

  1. Write up a report

*Write a publishable quality full report on working conditions of women migrant workers in Malaysia and Thailand’s manufacturing sector, based on findings from both desk study/literature reviews and field study, thoroughly incorporating the input of the project partners.

 

  1. Organising project consultation meetings and other related events

*Organise project consultation meetings where project partners can collectively design the collaborative research project and jointly analyse the findings.

*Organise other related events.

 

  1. Preparation of the activity reports

*Prepare highlights of the project activities MMN organises, e.g. meetings, press conferences, for the purpose of circulating broadly using the MMN webpage, list serves, social media or other means deemed appropriate.
