Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based and receive samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border.

 

Report to:  Sr. Lab Technician

Staff under supervision: N/A

 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assist Sr. Lab technician to culture liver cell.
  • Assist Sr. Lab technician for liver stage parasite infection.
  • Prepare material and chemical drug screening.
  • Monthly check lab supply stock and inventory.
  • Maintenance of laboratory materials and equipment are in good condition.
  • Coordinate with other department/external organisation for materials and equipment replacement/reparation.

 

Essential criteria

  • Bachelor Degree in Biology or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a clinical or research laboratory
  • Experience rearing Anopheles mosquitoes would be an advantage
  • Experience in drug discovery would be an advantage

 

Desirable criteria

  • Able to travel to other province and aboard
  • Effective communication skills / good working knowledge in English and Thai
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • Able to work under pressure.
