Violence Prevention Consultant

Context

Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) has been working to improve the wellbeing of vulnerable children and families in Thailand since 2002. BDF shifted its focus to assisting families from the construction sector in 2012 and supports children and families to access safety, health and education services through its tailored programming.

In 2017, BDF published a joint research paper with UNICEF, “Building Futures in Thailand,” which examined the living conditions of migrant workers living in construction site camps in Thailand. During this research project, 40% of mothers reported experiencing some form of verbal/ psychological abuse or physical violence, and nearly 90% of child participants reported experiencing some form of physical violence from their parents or guardians.

Objectives and Responsibilities

BDF is looking for an experienced consultant with a strong GBV and child protection background to support the adaptation of BDF’s violence prevention programming. This consultancy aims to ensure that the programming implemented by BDF is robust, supported by best practices and appropriately adapted for BDF’s target population, through close coordination with the programme’s core team.

Specifically, the consultant will:

• Adapt session materials (including, but not limited to activities and content) to BDF’s target population and operational context, incorporating feedback from the project’s core team
• Translate programme materials (including activities, sessions plans and training content) from English to Thai
• Support development and translation of monitoring tools

Timeline

The consultancy is a fixed-term contract, expected to begin at the end of June 2020 and must be completed within 2 months of the contract being signed. Adapted materials must be finalised and ready for use by the end of August, for project implementation to begin in September 2020.

Method of Engagement

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Impact Advisor, Impact and Innovation (I&I) Department, Baan Dek Foundation. The consultancy can be remote; however, the consultant is expected to maintain regular contact with the Impact Advisor, including weekly Skype sessions to check project progress during July and August. A monthly work plan will be developed outlining expected deliverables at the beginning of every month. Payments will be done on a monthly basis (beginning in July) after review of the work plan and upon completion of the deliverables as certified by the I&I team.

Qualifications

• Thai nationality preferred
• Fluency in Thai and advanced verbal and written English required
• Able to translate from English to Thai or Thai to English
• Degree in Child-related studies, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Public Health or related discipline
• Minimum one-year direct experience with gender-based violence programming
• Substantial knowledge of gender and gender-based violence
• Highly driven, dependable and results-oriented with an appreciation and knowledge of participatory learning and assessment tools
• Experience working with migrant workers from Cambodia, Lao and/or Myanmar
