1. Introduction
WWF-TH SR4SH project has identified a voluntary certification system of Forest Stewardship Councils (FSC) as one of the key tools to achieve sustainable forest management for Thailand. Under the project log-frame approved by the donors, as of June 2023, the project has achieved its target in supporting smallholder rubber farmers to become FSC-certified forests stated under the project log-frame. To advance the project’s deverbals under outputs no. 3.1 (see section budget details), the documentation of FSC-ESCD will make another milestone for a demonstration of FSC-FM positive impacts by a group of small rubber holders in Thailand. In addition, the completion of FSC-ESCD will also strengthen the rubber suppliers to gain a status of a deforestation free supply chain.
The Forest Stewardship Council's Standards for forest management has already required forest managers to maintain/conserve or restore ecosystem services and environmental values. Under the FSC-FM Principles and Criteria (FSC P&C), forest managers of a certified forest management unit is required to identify the provision of benefits or product based on the range of resources and ecosystem services existing in the management unit. The FSC-FM/CoC standard offers an FSC ecosystem service framework for verifying impacts and approving FSC ecosystem services claims that can be used to access ecosystem service markets. The FSC-ES framework sets out the requirements for the FSC certified forest to demonstrate the impacts of their activities on the maintenance, conservation, restoration or enhancement of ecosystem services.
