Introduction

The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome Trust, UK. The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalised populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

SMRU is based in Mae Ramat where the main laboratories are based and received samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

This position will be working for all departments of the laboratory.

• Database management
  • Equipment database: keep the equipment database up to date e.g. add new equipment, record status of equipment, dispose if no longer used; keep track of calibration and maintenance; labelling equipment number/inventory
  • External laboratory database including PCT and Mae Sot General hospital: maintain record, reporting results, communicate with doctors/clinic staff
  • Specimen database i.e. Freezer works: record of specimen inventory e.g. specimen in and out, including specimens in -20°C, -80°C, liquid nitrogen, and blood spot
  • Blood spot database: review blood spot inventory
• Equipment temperature record
  • Review temperature record of freezers, fridges, incubators, temperature control rooms
• Freezer maintenance record (in-house) i.e. de-icing, filter cleaning
  • Review maintenance record
• Organise equipment maintenance, calibration and repairing including contact company, get quotation and make appointment

Essential criteria

• A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. business studies, management, medical technology)
• Fluency in Thai and English both spoken and written
• Computing skills – ability to work with Microsoft Office and database applications
• Organisational skills – ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
• Able to work independently but to also interact well within a team environment
• Able to work under pressure
• Ready for any assignment required from the department
