Introduction

SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome (UK).

The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak Province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve.

The laboratory technician will have the following tasks:

• Extraction and quantification of human DNA from archived samples
• Support to the other staff members in sample processing and storage.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for maintaining the record of specimens sorted and transferred for DNA extraction.
• Extraction and quantification of human DNA from archived samples
• Occasionally, help with the routine work of haematology lab (CBC and CRP analysis, samples storage and sorting, databases update) together with the other lab staff.
• Support to the other staff members in results reporting to other members of the laboratory and SMRU clinical staff (Thai and foreigners).

Essential criteria

• A degree in medical technology or equivalent.
• Immediate availability
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• The ability to report to English speaking supervisor and relate with Thai and foreigner colleagues.
• The ability to follow instructions and work independently
• A flexible working schedule

Desirable Criteria

• Experience in nucleic acid extraction and having worked in haematology laboratory before
• Interest in contributing new research activities in haematologic field
• A track record of contributing to scientific publications.
