1.Introduction
Founded in 1937, Plan International is a development and humanitarian organization that advances children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world. Plan International works in 71 countries across the world – in 52 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas supported by fundraising in 21 countries and by 4 regional offices, 4 liaison offices and Plan international headquarters in the UK.
Plan International recognises the power and potential of every single child but this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it is girls who are most affected. As an independent organization, Plan International works alongside children, young people, supporters and partners to tackle the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children, supporting children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood, and enabling children to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity. Moreover, Plan International also drives changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge. 2.Background
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW), and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. Before that, on 20 November, it’s the World Children’s Day, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
The 16-day campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. It continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. Violence against women is a global pandemic that affects millions of women and girls worldwide. It is a violation of human rights and a significant barrier to achieving gender equality. To raise awareness and mobilize action to end this scourge, the international community observes the "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence" from November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10th, Human Rights Day.
