Request for Proposals - Development of Media Materials to Raise Awareness of Illegal Wildlife Trade among Ground Transportation Employees
1. Background:
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a distinguished organization with a profound commitment to the conservation of wildlife and their natural habitats. ZSL operates on a global scale and is presently immersed in a significant endeavor centered on combatting illegal wildlife trade (IWT) in Southeast Asia. This comprehensive project is designed to take proactive measures against IWT along ground transport routes. Wildlife traffickers rely on global transport to move their goods from source to market. Companies and transport associations with vehicles that use overland trafficking routes, e.g., logistics and postal companies, public transport, private hire, may be directly or indirectly facilitating IWT. However, they are also well-placed to identify and develop relevant and targeted solutions to the problem. This project component focuses on identifying and engaging leadership from relevant companies to share intelligence and take action to reduce involvement in IWT.
Part of this initiative involves the creation of tailored media products with a specific focus: to educate and raise awareness among ground transportation employees. These materials will need to be created to provide in-depth understanding of the legal aspects surrounding wildlife trade. They will provide practical guidance to employees on how to protect themselves from unintentional involvement in IWT. Additionally, they will emphasize the importance of being educated about IWT and vigilant and informed to avoid any inadvertent involvement.
Moreover, these media products will shed light on the potential legal ramifications individuals might face, even if their involvement is unintentional. This should include information on charges, penalties, and legal procedures related to IWT. By disseminating this crucial knowledge, we aim to empower ground transportation personnel to play a proactive role in the prevention of illegal wildlife trade.
Tangible outcomes;
1. Increased Awareness: Engaged media products will lead to a noticeable rise in awareness and knowledge levels regarding illegal wildlife trade among ground transportation employees.
2. Enhanced Understanding: Employees will gain a deeper comprehension of the complexities and consequences associated with illegal wildlife trade.
3. Improved Compliance: Greater awareness will result in improved compliance with regulations and a decreased likelihood of unintentional involvement in illegal activities.
4. Proactive Reporting: Employees will be more inclined to report suspicious activities, contributing to the prevention and interception of illegal wildlife trade.
5. Strengthened Partnerships: Collaboration between transportation companies, enforcement agencies, and conservation organizations will be bolstered, creating a more unified front against illegal wildlife trade.
6. Positive Impact on Ecosystems: By deterring illegal wildlife trade, these media products will indirectly contribute to the preservation of local and global ecosystems.
7. Mitigated Legal Risks: Better-informed employees are less likely to engage in activities that could result in legal consequences, safeguarding both individuals and companies.
8. Demonstrable Commitment: Companies involved will showcase their dedication to ethical practices and wildlife conservation, potentially bolstering their reputation.
9. Long-lasting Effects: The knowledge gained from these media products will endure, contributing to a sustained reduction in illegal wildlife trade involvement.
10. Contributing to Conservation: Participation in this initiative will directly support conservation efforts, aiding in the protection of endangered species and their habitats.
