Short-term Policy Advocacy Officer (CARE Asia Management Unit Office based in Bangkok) – 6 months

 

CARE’s Policy and Advocacy unit is offering a short-term six-month opportunity to an exceptional recent graduate ready to explore a career in the international relief and development sector. BEFORE APPLYING, Make Sure You Meet The Following Requirements

 

  • Able to commit to full time office hours for the entire period: December 15, 2023, to June 30 2024.
  • Eligible to work in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • A recent graduate from an undergraduate program (within 1 year) or current master's student who can commit as per the stated timeline.
  • Adhere to CARE’s mission and vision.
  • Strong written and spoken English.

 

DETAILS

  • Reporting to the Asia Regional Advocacy Advisor, this role will be solely dedicated to supporting and advancing CARE Asia’s policy advocacy agenda.
  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Location: For this in-person short-term opportunity, you are expected to work from the CARE office in Bangkok, Thailand
  • Appropriate Fields of Study/Majors: International Development, Gender studies, International Affairs/Politics, Law or related field.

Description

The Policy and Advocacy Team exists to support CARE Asia Regional advocacy work across nine country offices (Nepal, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and The Philippines). The team works towards advocating and influencing policies for improving the lives of affected communities, with efforts in addressing the gender inequalities of women and girls across the Asia Pacific region. CARE also works to provide effective, efficient, timely, and coordinated support to country offices to strengthen the leadership and empowerment of women and girls in line with our equitable partnership standards and locally led approaches to advocacy and partnership-building. The objectives of the Asia Regional Advocacy are grounded in our organizational strategy, supporting the delivery of strategic imperatives to reach the most vulnerable and to collaborate and advocate for broader impact which we do by building and working through local partners and networks.

The Opportunity

As a Policy Advocacy Officer, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work on tasks related to monitoring and tracking advocacy impact and influence in coordination with country advocacy leads, under the guidance of the Regional Advocacy Adviser;
  • Gain practical and educational experience while contributing to CARE Asia’s advocacy objectives.
  • Support the Regional Advocacy Adviser as needed to advance policy advocacy goals. Access weekly professional development programming delivered through CARE Digital Library.
  • Be surrounded by people who motivate and inspire you.
  • Make a lasting impact on the lives of the most vulnerable women and girls.

 

Some Major Responsibilities Will Include

  • Track advocacy wins at country level and supports with the development of the AIIR tools, using a hands-on approach.
  • Support with literature review and other types of research in support of advancing the Regional Advocacy priorities as guided by the supervisor.
  • Remain aware of developments within the portfolio mentioned above.
  • Prepare presentations and other supporting materials as requested and needed by the Regional Advocacy Adviser.
  • Support internal CARE Asia Advocacy group discussions and meetings, both taking note of updates from country.
  • Support with the monitoring of policy updates at regional and in country level, especially on the climate change and justice portfolio.
  • Admin support as needed.

 

Essential Qualities For This Role

  • You are interested in pursuing a career in development, or international law.
  • You can work independently in order to achieve the desired outcome.
  • You have prepared papers and reports in English.
  • You have experience in academic research in development contexts, and have proven experience having worked in a multi-cultural context, including as a volunteer.
  • You are a professional user of MS Office, including Word, Excel and Power point.
